'This was meant to be': Cherished wedding dress transformed into angel dresses for grieving families - 97 Seven Country WGLR

COLUMBUS, Wis. – It’s tough to let old keepsakes go, but it’s made easier when it’s a gift that can help families start to heal.

It started as a love story when Caroline and Clarence Strohschein got married in 1948 in Beaver Dam, where they had two sons: Mark and Alan.

“They were married 72 years ago yesterday,” Alan Strohschein said. “They had a good, fruitful, long marriage.”

There was some sacrifice in their lives, too. Strohschein said his father took over the whole family farm at age 16.

“Our mother was born in 1924 and was definitely a member of the Greatest Generation,” he said. “She was a Rosie the Riveter.”

Stohschein describes his mother’s wedding dress as simple, but cherished all the same.

“Several times during her life I think she felt, ‘Well, I don’t have any daughters or granddaughters that could wear this dress,’” he said.

Throughout the years, however, his mother did wear it every now and then, including in 2005 at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus.

“I surprised her by renting a tux so it would be more meaningful,” Mark Strohschein said. “(In the photo) my mother has a tear in her eye. I probably have a tear in my eye.”

“Mother died in 2015, and wedding dresses sit idly in closets and garment bags,” Alan Strohschein said. “Nobody does dress-up day anymore. Everyone dresses people down with their language. We wanted to dress up people.”

He took an idea his wife saw in a magazine to a group at his church called Faith in Stitches, which makes things for the community, such as masks and winter gear.

“We just try to help out wherever we can,” member Betsy Woodward said.

Woodward said it was a bit intimidating at first, but she and several of her friends managed to repurpose Caroline Strohschein’s 72-year-old wedding dress. They carefully crafted 13 angel dresses, or baby burial outfits, for the nearby Columbus hospital to give to families.

“In our family, we’ve had a situation in the last couple years where a Milwaukee-based hospital had given the mother the angel dress, so I knew how important it was,” Woodward said. “When they have something that was made my loving hands donated by loving people, I think that helps with the grieving process for them.”

“This is something heart-wrenching and heartwarming all at the same time,” said Kristi Line, executive director for the Prairie Ridge Health Foundation, which acts as a liaison between the hospital and community. “It’s not an emotion you can put into words. To have somebody from your community reach out and offer something that meant something to them as a way of helping them through the process, it means a lot to families.”

As wedding dresses are known to do, Alan Stohschein said seeing the dresses “kind of takes your breath away.”

“This was meant to be,” he said.

Much like his parent’s love story, which isn’t ending after all these years, but has been transformed.

“Well, mom’s always watching,” Alan Strohschein said. “Caroline and Clarence are saying thumbs up.”

“I concur, it’s a double thumbs up,” his brother, Mark Strohschein said.

What happens when a team of investigators descends on a sports medicine clinic with pictures of male and female models? Research!

The team, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, wondered about patients’ reactions to surgeon attire. Showing individuals 10 photos of male and female models in varying attire, the researchers asked patients to identify that person’s most likely role on the healthcare team. The outcome, “The Effect of an Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Attire on Patient Perceptions of Surgeon Traits and Identity: A Cross-Sectional Survey,” appears in the August 3, 2020 edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Global Research and Reviews.

“Orthopaedic surgery remains one of the most underrepresented fields in medicine for women at the attending level,” said co-author Andrea Spiker, M.D. to OSN. “Female orthopaedic surgeons are therefore perhaps more aware of the differences in patient perception related to gender, attire, and other subtle factors beyond the scope of our current study. We are extremely fortunate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to have 25% women orthopaedic surgery faculty, and a number of female orthopaedic surgery residents (including 4 of 6 of our intern class), due in large part to the strong commitment to supporting the best candidates regardless of gender by our Chair, Dr. Tom Zdeblick, and our Senior Vice Chair, Dr. Tamara Scerpella.”

“As a strong advocate myself for our future female orthopaedic surgeon colleagues, I worked with two of our outstanding female orthopaedic residents, Dr. Stephanie Goldstein and Dr. Emma Klosterman, to develop the study published here. We sought to evaluate patient perception associated with surgeon attire, and the differences seen based on surgeon gender.”

“On a personal note, prior to coming to UW-Madison, I spent decades at academic institutions on the east coast. Each institution’s orthopaedic department seems to have its own ‘dress code.’ I was curious to see if we would find patient perceptions that would support one ‘dress code’ over another, and it turns out our study did identify some interesting revelations.”

238 participants…All Hail the White Coat

“We found that in all attire, except for business attire without a white coat, men were significantly more likely to be identified as a surgeon than women. Women were more likely to be identified as a nurse, physician’s assistant, or hospital administrator instead of surgeon when compared to men in the same attire. Patients uniformly thought that both male and female surgeons wearing a white coat on top of any attire were more competent and more likely to give a good surgical outcome than those without a white coat. We also found that without a white coat, a woman in scrubs was more likely to be identified as a surgeon than a woman in business attire or feminine attire. However, once a white coat was added on top of any attire worn by a woman, these differences in identification as a surgeon evened out. However, a female surgeon in feminine attire, even with a white coat, resulted in patient perception that the surgeon was less likely to excel in performing the physical parts of surgery than women in scrubs with a white coat.”

“We had hypothesized that women would be less frequently identified as surgeons than males based on our own personal experiences and existing literature, but we were still somewhat surprised that this was still very clearly the case. We had also hypothesized that feminine attire would be associated with the perception that the surgeon would be less likely to excel at the physical aspects of surgery. This also proved to be true – when feminine attire, instead of scrubs, was worn by a female, the patient believed she would be less likely to excel in performing the physical parts of surgery. But we were happy to find feminine attire did not affect patient perceptions of competence, surgical outcomes or trustworthiness.”

“One interesting trend we noted was related to the age of the patient taking the survey. Patients under age 50, compared to patients over age 50, were more likely to identify a woman as a surgeon if she wore business attire and a white coat or scrubs only.”

French School Dress Code Debate Sparks Cries Of Sexism And Misogyny - Forbes

The new French school year typically brings some kind of controversy. This year’s war of words involves school dress codes, which by and large tend to be rules over what teenage girls can and cannot wear.

The storm began brewing shortly after the rentrée, as the beginning of a new school year is known in France. The Borda High School in the town of Dax, tucked in the southwest corner of the country, displayed some posters to illustrate what types of clothing were not allowed.

At the top, the poster said: “tenue correcte exigée” (correct clothes required). Underneath were two pictures: One of a teenage girl wearing a top that left her belly button exposed, and a second of her wearing a miniskirt. Both photos had large red X’s splashed across them.

A student shared the poster on Instagram along with a defiant statement that accused school officials of sexism:

“They will surely tell us that it distracts the boys, that it is explicit. So men can dress however they want. They sexualize us though we are dressing for the heat, should we wear a sweater to please them? ... They would rather remind us that a woman is an object than deal with the real problems of this establishment, and there are many of them.”

The ensuing outcry led to a national show of solidarity with the students. On September 14, teenage girls across the country staged a protest by wearing skirts and other supposedly prohibited clothes to school and then sharing photos of themselves on Twitter using the hashtag #Lundi14Septembre.

As the subject continued to spark debates, President Emmanuel Macron found himself asked to weigh in by a teenager during a visit to the Gascon town of Condom. Macron generally seemed hesitant to respond, saying that he “didn’t have to get involved in everything.” But then he added:

“There is a freedom of dress but it's a good thing that we try to keep some codes in college, in high school. Because afterward you never know where it ends,” Macron said. “Common sense is better than regulation in this matter.”

But while Macron may have hoped to stay out of this morass, education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer dove right in during an interview two days later on French radio.

"It is important to arrive at school in proper attire," Blanquer said on RTL. “You don't go to school as you go to the beach or a nightclub...Everyone can understand that we come to school dressed in a Republican way.”

While he later clarified that “Republican way” meant demonstrating equality, his remarks had already touched off another round of fury on social media. That included many people pointing out that one of France’s symbols, Marianne, is often depicted with a breast exposed.

Elisabeth Moreno, France’s minister for equality between men and women, responded in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper that dress codes were archaic.

"In France, everyone is free to dress as they wish," she said. “It has taken centuries for women to be free from dress codes.” She added: “It is also an issue of education for young boys about the relationship they maintain with young girls and linked to the values ​​of respect. "

All this chatter prompted French magazine Marianne to enlist French polling agency IFOP to check the pulse of the country on this topic. The results published on September 25 managed to just fan the flames even higher. It wasn’t the actual responses themselves, but rather the nature of the questions and a rather inartful graphic created by IFOP.

The poll asked more than 2,000 people whether or not students should be allowed to wear outfits that featured “no bra” or “plunging necklines” or “crop top” or a t-shirt that left parts of a bra exposed. It also asked about miniskirts, short shorts, tight clothes, and jeans with holes in them. There were no questions about boys’ attire.

In response, Twitter lit up again with such critiques as the one by actress Florence Porcel who sarcastically called on IFOP to launch a similar poll for teenage boys around various clothes that could make their “package” too distracting.

As the first month of school ends, the controversy continues to simmer. Students at another high school staged a protest on September 28 over talk of a dress code, according to France Blue radio. And they launched a Change.org petition supporting the right to wear a crop top at school.
