WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many women, including some of us at WWAY, will wear black this week to show support for the Junior League of Wilmington’s Little Black Dress Initiative.

During the LDBI, members and supporters of the Junior League of Wilmington will wear the same black dress or other black outfit for five consecutive days to demonstrate the effects of human trafficking and poverty and to increase awareness of related issues.

NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom - A British bar owner who shuttered his business amid the United Kingdom’s coronavirus lockdown restrictions is turning to religion.

Since the U.K. permits places of worship to remain open amid the COVID-19 pandemic, James Aspell hopes to turn 400 Rabbits Tequila and Mezcal Cocktail Bar into “The Church of The Four Hundred Rabbits.”

Aspell said his antics started as a joke, and that he’s not trying to offend anyone or break rules. But he’s serious about the message he’s hoping to send.

According to the BBC, the lockdown measures consist of three tiers.

The first tier simply applies the rule of six to indoor and outdoor settings. That means only groups of six or smaller may gather.

Tier 2 applies the rule of six to outdoor gatherings, but prohibits household mixing anywhere indoors. Tier 3 allows household mixing in public spaces, like parks.

Bars in Tier 2 may only open to serve “substantial meals.” Pubs in the third tier are only allowed to operate as a takeout or delivery service, the BBC reported.

“With the new restrictions, we’re forced to close and it could be months before we can reopen. We don’t have a food offering so even if we were in Tier 2, we couldn’t open,” Aspell told the Nottingham Post.

In all tiers, gyms, massage parlors and hair salons may remain open, which Aspell described as “ridiculous.”

“We feel like we’ve been targeted unfairly, to an extent, and it seems wrong,” he stressed.

Aspell submitted his application to Nottingham’s registrar general for consideration. While he waits, his establishment will be signing up new members of its congregation.

Those who join his church can style themselves as “a bunny believer” or “a reverend of the righteous rabbits.”

Aspell has committed to remaining closed unless his application is approved or restrictions are lifted. But even if Aspell’s endeavor is successful, he recognizes they likely won’t be able to serve alcohol anymore.

“We might be able to adapt in a different way and have some fun with it,” he said.

According to data collected by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, the United Kingdom has more than 1.65 million confirmed coronavirus cases — the sixth most in the world.

As of Nov. 30, more than 58,000 of them have passed away.

Put on your rubber gloves and mix up your dye according to the instructions on the label, using the dry weight of the garment to determine proportions. (For all-purpose dyes, Rit recommends one liquid bottle or two powder packages per two-ish pounds of fabric.)

If you want a wash of color, stick to the suggested ratio, but if you’re looking for an ultra saturated shade like a deep magenta or an emerald green, for example, you can double it.

For liquid dyes, shake well and add to your dye bath along with a teaspoon of soap. If using a powder, dissolve in around two cups of very hot water and do the same. For enhanced color, you can also add a cup of salt for fabrics featuring cotton, rayon, ramie, or linen, or a little over ¾ cup of white vinegar for fabrics containing nylon, silk, or wool.

Candice Wu could hardly believe her eyes. Squinting in the darkness, the bridal designer took in the wreckage of her Harrison Avenue studio. A water-main break had destroyed the space a month before and Wu, back for the first time since the April 2020 flood, had come to see the damage. It wasn’t pretty: Her formerly pristine boutique, teeming with the ornate, big-skirted gowns for which the designer is best known, was now littered with debris and mildew, the lights long burned out from 5 feet of putrid water. And yet, standing amid the rubble of what she had built since starting her brand in 2011, Wu also found something unexpected: hope. “It was so dark, but I could see the dresses still sparkled,” she recalls. “I knew I had to start over.”

And she has. After negotiating with her landlord, Wu ended up moving her operation to a different unit in the same building. Opened last month, her new studio is an ethereal, all-white space—a fresh start befitting her elegant gowns, including a miraculous new collection created in the chaos of this year. The designer’s calling card is over-the-top, fantastical wedding dresses with long trains and dramatic detailing, but her latest frocks are markedly “less complicated,” she says, with sleeker silhouettes and pared-down beading. “A lot of people have moved to backyard or smaller weddings [because of the pandemic], but they’re still having ceremonies,” Wu says. “But whereas before they were doing big ball gowns to fill huge venues with lots of guests, now they’re all doing mermaid-style, simple dresses.”

Still, the designer hasn’t completely abandoned her big-and-bold approach (as one look at the cascading masterpiece on the previous page will attest). Although many of Wu’s brides are erring on the conservative side for their intimate, socially distanced celebrations, the designer feels strongly that after this current period of austerity, there will be an explosion of opulence in the other direction. And when that happens, Wu will be ready—new shop and all. “Once there is a vaccine for COVID, people will go crazy because they have been stuck in the house for a year,” she says. “I think there will be a boom after this.”

To accept the Order of St. John’s Service Medal, her highness wore a colorful pink and red checkerboard patterned shift that was all the rage on Instagram.
