How ‘Pose’ Pulled Off a Mechanically Blooming Wedding Dress - Variety

talu.indah.link

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched the penultimate episode of “Pose,” which aired May 30 on FX.

“It’s been a journey to get here,” Angel (Indya Moore) says to Lil Papi (Angel Bismark Curiel) on the penultimate episode of FX’s “Pose.” It’s the opening line of her wedding vows, but it also describes the creation of the very dress she is wearing.

“We were down for seven months and I had a lot of time to think about” the wedding dress, costume designer Analucia McGorty tells Variety. “When I finally got the script, I had this insane idea that I’d been ruminating [on] for a while about making a dress that was mechanical and that would physically bloom.”

When Angel first tries on the dress at the bridal salon, it is more in line with ‘90s fashion trends than the extravagance typically seen on “Pose”: an asymmetrical, strapless v-neck satin gown. Though beautiful, its simplicity (combined with a run-in with a transphobic shop owner) hints that more is to come on the big day. Cut to the wedding and as Angel sets foot onto the aisle, her entrance is not just announced by music, but the blooming of soft, fuchsia petals; flowers embellish the front of the gown and its train.

Before McGorty received the final season scripts, she spent much of her time filling sketchbooks with endless wedding dress possibilities. Her conversations with Moore and constantly gazing at the blossoming tree outside her house left the costume designer inspired by nature.

“With how ‘Pose’ is written and the arc of everybody’s stories, they’re blooming into who they are. It’s a process of seeding that flower until it blooms to be the beauty, the potential it always had,” McGorty says.

But to build a fashion moment of this magnitude required all hands on deck. Particularly in light of the pandemic, McGorty sought to incorporate small businesses in any big project she and her team did in New York City. For the functional component, they worked with Monkey Boy Productions — known for working with “Saturday Night Live” — to locally build the dress’ mechanics. As for the floral design, they collaborated with M&S Schmalberg Flowers, a family-run business that is the oldest fabric flower company in the United States.

“We knew they were struggling because the wedding industry had gone away, and we knew that all of the fashion industry had gone away,” McGorty explains. “So we wanted to make sure we incorporated them in helping us make all of the handmade individual flowers for the dress.”

The dress’ development took two months to finalize, and required “a lot of testing.” McGorty worked with the dress a number of times to ensure the mechanics were in working order, but it didn’t prepare her for the magic of when Moore did a rehearsal of the full look. Describing it as a “cosmic connection,” McGorty recalls everyone crying, hugging and dancing.

“This is sort-of a love note to Indya Moore,” McGorty says. “We have a lot of conversations about finding serenity and nature and growth, and I feel like [Indya] has taught me a lot about growth and the world and listening, and I wanted to create something that was a tribute to that and to [them] as a person.”

In addition to portraying a larger narrative significance and meeting “Pose”’s typical standards of grandeur, the escalation of Moore’s wedding dress was also necessary for the bride to stand out in a crowd of dozens of other bridal gowns. Elektra (Dominique Jackson) gifts all the women guests — all from the ballroom community — wedding dresses of their own. It’s an extension of her gift given to Angel and Papi to throw them a lavish ceremony. She explains the need for such indulgence in Episode 5, also capturing the significance of why Angel’s dress had to be so special.

“Your bride is unlike any other. She will be the first, the first from a community that has been excluded from happily ever after. You’ve been to the balls and seen the girls walk bridal runway,” Elektra tells Papi. “That category was invented, like all other categories, in order to give us a chance to experience what the outside world gets to live.”

Blanca (Mj Rodriguez) adds, “When all those girls sit in that fancy ballroom, they get to watch one of their own walk down a real aisle in a real wedding dress, not for some plastic trophy, but to marry a real man who loves her. They will realize they can do it too.”

Angel’s attainment of the ultimate romantic fantasy is moment of unencumbered joy for the whole ball community. One of the character’s biggest struggles throughout the show has been accepting that she is worthy of love. The wedding finally serves as confirmation of this — sealed by an “I Swear” serenade— and that Papi is not going anywhere.

“This season has had a lot of ups and downs for her. You see her kind of falling apart a little bit,” McGorty says. “And then you slowly see her start to come back into herself and have that fun, flirty, innocent love that is always pouring out of Angel. And we really wanted to show that with the wedding dress, and have that pop and fun. That moment, it does make her look like a woman. It’s not a princess dress. It’s very much like she looks like a woman ready to walk into the rest of her life.”

“Pose” airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. on FX. The series finale will air on June 6.

Deb Haaland wore a ribbon skirt to her swearing in ceremony. Meet the designer who created it. - CBC.ca

talu.indah.link

Leading up to Deb Haaland's swearing-in ceremony as the first Indigenous cabinet secretary in U.S. history, Agnes Woodward had a secret.

Haaland had invited her, a Plains Cree dressmaker from Kawacatoose First Nation in Saskatchewan, to sew a traditional ribbon skirt for the occasion. Woodward spent weeks creating the garment — a long, blue skirt with rainbow coloured ribbons, applique butterflies, stars, and a cornstalk to represent Haaland's membership with the Laguna Pueblo tribe. But, she didn't tell anyone what she was working on.

"I had so much fear that it wasn't real or it wasn't going to really happen," she said. "I didn't want to get my hopes up for something so powerful."

That wariness had come from years of "constant disappointment," she told Falen Johnson, host of CBC's Unreserved. "That constant feeling of injustice. That constant feeling of feeling defeated."

Some of the ribbon skirts designed and made by Agnes Woodward. She added stars to her dress as a personal touch. (Submitted by Agnes Woodward)
Woodward's parents were activists who, she said, spent her childhood fighting to be heard, but "were always shut down."

Growing up in Saskatchewan, Woodward experienced racism and began to internalize feelings of shame about being Plains Cree. She also developed a complicated relationship with ribbon skirts.

When her parents required that she wear ribbon skirts at powwows and weddings, she would do her best to rebel.

"I used to hate wearing long skirts," she said.

It wasn't until Woodward became a mother and began to make skirts for her own daughters, that she realized the shame she had carried. She made the conscious decision then to reconnect her children to their cultural teachings, without forcing them to wear traditional attire.

"When we wear a ribbon skirt, it should be because we want to," she said, "because it empowers us, because it can tell a story, because it connects us. Never because we're forced to."

So when Woodward heard that Haaland wanted to wear a traditional ribbon skirt, that she would choose to wear a custom-made skirt to represent her Indigeneity at such a symbolic event, Woodward was flooded with mixed emotions. She was deeply honoured to design the skirt, but couldn't believe it would play out as planned until she first saw Haaland walk out in it.

And then she did. Haaland appeared in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on March 18, to be sworn in as U.S. secretary of the interior. There she was, wearing the long, vibrant ribbon skirt.

"It was such an amazing moment," Woodward said. "I still look at it and just get so excited, and so happy and proud."

And when the moment was finally realized, when Haaland wore the skirt while being sworn into cabinet, it brought Woodward a new, more assured hopefulness.

"For me, it really was a message of hope," Woodward said. "To see it, Deb Haaland, being sworn in as the first secretary, in the way that she chose to be sworn in, with her whole family wearing [ribbon] skirts and different traditional regalia, was just amazing. And I think it just really sends a message of hope. ...She's in a place that I believe is rightfully any of ours. Any Indigenous person has a right to sit at those positions."

Kate Middleton Thinks Prince William Should Dress As Spider-Man - Vanity Fair

talu.indah.link

Kate Middleton gave an unexpected proclamation to the Commonwealth: Make Mine Marvel!

Well, not exactly—but a conversation between the Duchess of Cambridge and a participant in the National Portrait Gallery's Hold Still project suggests that she understands that with great power comes great responsibility. And that maybe Prince William may look dashing in a spandex suit.

In November, 2020, Kate spoke to Jason Baird who, with friend Andrew Baldock, decided to cheer up kids during lockdown by dressing up as Spider-Man and doing some impressive spidey moves. The selected photo in the exhibition shows the internationally beloved wall-crawler in mid-flip as three kids cheer on from inside their homes. It is one of the 100 finalists.

Baird, who is a martial arts teacher, figured it would be fun to bring a smile to kids in his community as the recognizable superhero, and people took to it immediately. Soon signs appeared in his town of Stockport from youngsters pleading, "Spiderman [sic] Stop Here."

Quickly thereafter they had helpers from across different franchises and branded IPs, like Snow White, Wonder Woman, and Batman.

Impressed by Baird's spirit, Middleton wondered if the trend might take on at Kensington Palace, and concluded that she "might have to get William a suit." She then issued something of a royal diss at her husband, saying "he's not going to get the air clearance" of a martial arts instructor.

The chat was recently uploaded to the Duke and Duchess's Instagram account, with a longer version on YouTube. There have been no reports of any palace sightings of Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, or Electro.

Are you brave enough to wear the micro mini skirt? - Metro.co.uk

Are you brave enough to wear the micro-mini skirt
How high would you go? (Picture: Urban Outfitters/I Am Gia)

If you consider yourself brave or fearless, how high would you go?

Now we don’t mean scaling a building or jumping from a height, we are actually talking about hemlines.

You see the micro mini skirt is trending and fashion is daring to bare.

While you may be instinctively hiding your legs at the thought, it was only a matter of time.

And truly, it makes sense.

After a year of restrictions, we want to have fun with our fashion choices.

We have spent too long in leggings and tracksuits and it is only natural that we are craving some sartorial excitement.

Plus, there is a case for the skirt length theory.

The idea behind skirt length theory is that shorter skirts have a tendency to appear in times when consumer confidence and excitement are high. In contrast, the theory says long skirts are worn more in times of fear and general gloom.

In other words, long skirts were 2020 and short skirts are 2021. As a buzz for life is taking over, hemlines are as high as our hopes.

But the micro mini can be terrifying and its popularity is growing at an exceptional rate.

Just last week, Rihanna was seen sporting a white cutout micro miniskirt by London-based designer Maximilian.

Meanwhile, Y2K fashion is an adored aesthetic for those born after 1997 and micro miniskirts are the pinnacle of the craze. At times, TikTok almost feels like a shrine to the mini-movement.

Brands such as I Am Gia are championing the trend with gusto and as we hit high summer, expect to see more and more micro minis on your social media feeds.

Nevertheless, how do you wear one?

Much of the hesitation around micro minis is down to fear. Whether that is anxiety about showing too much skin or concern for an unexpected wardrobe mishap.

There is most certainly a basis for the unease, but like every trend, you can make it work for you.

When wearing a micro skirt, always consider balance.

Wear with an oversized shirt or t-shirt on top and pair with an oversized blazer for a sophisticated yet edgy look.

For a nod to the sixties, couple a micro-mini with some knee-high boots and a billowing blouse.

And if all else fails, wear with tights when the temperatures start to cool.

Yet the only adornment that a mini really needs is confidence. If you think you look good, you definitely do. Poise is the finishing touch to any outfit.

So remember to wear what you love with whatever you want.

And with that in mind, how high would you go?

Ozawkie resident Leona Tyler used to sew her own clothes. Now she is making dresses for orphans in Haiti. - The Topeka Capital-Journal

talu.indah.link

OZAWKIE — Leona Tyler used to fashion her own dresses when she was young. Now she is doing the same for girls in Haiti.

Over the past few years, Tyler, of Ozawkie, has been sewing dresses that are shipped to young girls at 22 orphanages in Haiti.

Since then, Tyler has made at least 1,500 dresses in two different sizes and a variety of patterns and colors.

The project first started when Tyler joined a sewing group at Grantville Methodist Church. The group mainly makes quilts and knitted hats. When Tyler decided she wanted to make dresses, she took the project on her own.

Before sewing the dresses, Leona Tyler cuts out the fabric and color-coordinates it with lace, thread and rick-rack trim.

Tyler has experience sewing as she used to make all of her own clothes and has fashioned several items that decorate her home. But this is the first time she has sewn to this scale.

Being able to make the dresses for the young girls makes Tyler feel proud.

"They don't have anything," Tyler said. "What little they have a storm will come, and they have nothing. I'm sure they are so proud to have a new dress."

Tyler can make two dresses a day once the fabric has been cut.

Her sewing room located in her home is filled with fabric, thread and sewing supplies, neatly organized on shelves. Finished dresses sit in stacks on a shelf ready to be sent off to Haiti.

She puts great care into the project.

More: Kansas Children's Discovery Center's reptilian pavilion is reminiscent of Capitol Federal's original downtown building

Stacks of finished dresses in a variety of colors and patterns sit on a shelf in Leona Tyler's home. The dresses will soon be sent out to girls in Haiti.

Before she sews the dresses, Tyler cuts the fabric using two pre-made patterns — one small and one medium. She then lays out the fabric and matches each with thread, lace and rick-rack trim.

All that is left is to sew the outfit together.

As she rifles through the finished dresses, she points out the small details from the front pocket to the tied, adjustable straps. Each dress is unique and brightly colored, which is important to Tyler.

She knows the girls will enjoy wearing a pretty and fun dress that has been accented with delicate lace or trim.

Some of the dresses have been crafted from pillowcases, sheets and hospital scrubs. As long as the fabric isn't worn or stained, Tyler can make it into a dress.

All of the fabric Tyler uses has been donated to her by friends or picked up at a garage sale.

More: Mulvane Art Museum will auction off pieces from 23 artists. Three Kansans share inspiration behind their work.

Leona Tyler likes to use fabric that is bright and colorful.

"When I go to garage sales and tell them what I do, twice the people just gave me what they had," Tyler said.

Tyler said she hopes the girls who receive the dresses are happy to have new clothing and they know people are thinking about them.

"They don't have much and they do appreciate what little they get," she said.

Tyler said she hopes to continue making dresses as long she feels up to the task, adding, "I enjoy making them and to think they are getting new things."

Madonna Raves Over Son David Banda in a Dress: 'Confidence Is Everything' - Newsweek

talu.indah.link

Decades after earning a name for herself for breaking barriers, Madonna appears to be passing the baton to her children.

The pop icon, 62, took to Instagram over the weekend to proudly share footage of her son David Banda, 15, modeling a white silk Mae Couture dress.

With 1990s Snap! classic "The Power" serving as the soundtrack, the teen was seen confidently strutting through the halls of the family's palatial home in the gown.

Accessorizing with a pair of rectangular sunglasses, David was also shown posing for snapshots before palm trees as he showcased his ensemble in all of its glory.

His ankle-length dress of choice was decorated with a series of hand-painted black letters and was teamed with a pair of pristine white basketball shoes.

As his journey through the family mansion reached its conclusion in the kitchen, David scooped up some white grapes from the counter as he expressed his joy.

Bouncing up and down as he stretched his legs, David said: "I low-key like wearing... like, it's so freeing, you know what I mean?"

Captioning the clip, Madonna was the ultimate proud mother, as she wrote: "Confidence is Everything.......... #davidbanda @mae_couture #snap."

The video attracted a flood of supportive comments, including one from Madonna's close friend Debi Mazar, who compared him to supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Actress Mazar, who has appeared in a number of Madonna's music videos over the years, wrote: "Omg I Love him... Look out @naomi."

Mother-of-six Madonna adopted David from his native Malawi in 2006 when he was 13 months old. At the time, she was married to British filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

The star has previously spoken about the traits she believes David has inherited from her, admitting he's the one she had the most in common with of all her children.

"What he has more than anything is focus and determination," she told British Vogue in a 2019 interview. "I'm pretty sure he got it from me."

She went on: "He's the one I have the most in common with. I feel like he gets me; he has more of my DNA than any of my children so far. Let's see what happens—it's still early days for everyone."

Madonna's brood includes daughter Lourdes Leon, 24, from her relationship with Carlos Leon, and son Rocco Ritchie, from her marriage to Guy Ritchie.

Like David, her other children were adopted from the south-east African nation of Malawi—daughter Mercy James, 15, and twins Stella and Estere, eight.

Kenneth Cole Teams Up With Zynga in 'High Heels!' Game - WWD

talu.indah.link

Kenneth Cole and Zynga, a global leader in interactive entertainment, have partnered to introduce the Kenneth Cole Pride 2021 collection in the hit game “High Heels!”

This collaboration represents the first time that Cole’s style will be featured in a mobile game. For the first two weeks of June, gamers will be able to outfit their character and strut the virtual runway in items from the Kenneth Cole Pride 2021 collection. That includes the brand’s iconic Kam sneakers with rainbow stripe, shirts with a rainbow graphic that says “Being Different Is What We Have in Common,” and other accessories such as a watch, sunglasses and mask lanyards.

For every Pride product purchased on kennethcole.com, a percentage of net sales will be donated to the Mental Health Coalition, which Cole founded in 2020. MHC offers resources specific to LGBTQ communities, including an LGBTQ mental health guide and the ability to connect with its member organizations for support.

“As a brand, we have been supporting equal rights for the LGBTQ community for almost 30 years. For our latest initiative, in recognition of Pride, we are proud to partner with Zygna, a company with shared values, to further highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance,” said Kenneth Cole, chairman and chief creative officer of Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. “We are including our Pride product in ‘High Heels!,’ allowing millions of people to experience celebrating Pride, and as a reminder that ‘being different is what we have in common.'”

Frank Gibeau, chief executive officer of Zynga, added, “At Zynga, we believe, unequivocally, that our strength is in our diversity and that we are called to celebrate our differences. We are proud to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in celebration of Pride Month.” He said he was excited to be partnering with a boundary-pushing brand like Cole to increase representation “in our games and empower players to show their pride, spirit and fashion in ‘High Heels!’ — it’s a perfect fit.”

Developed by Rollic, a subsidiary of Zynga, “High Heels!” has been downloaded more than 60 million times around the world. In the game, players maneuver an increasingly challenging catwalk in high heels, which stack higher as they complete levels. The stakes rise as players progress through a series of worldwide fashion shows in global cities including London, Beijing, Paris and New York. Earning access to new customization elements as they advance, players can update their character with new clothing, fashion, hairstyles and shoes.

Dorcas Low Prince: Every dress, every bride her favorite - Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

talu.indah.link

Just as Dorcas Prince was finishing up this interview, a squeal erupted from the other side of the room.

A bride-to-be was standing in front of a full-length mirror with her family and friends around her. They broke into applause. She was handed a framed poster that read, "I said yes to the dress at Low's Bridal!"

Prince, who owns the business in Brinkley with her husband, Stanley, also smiled brightly.

"People ask me how I got into the bridal business, and I say it was God's decision," says Prince, who at one time planned to follow in her father's footsteps and become a pharmacist.

Low's is located in the circa 1913, fully restored Rusher Hotel on West Cedar Street in Brinkley. It houses more than 2,500 gowns -- or almost enough dresses for every person in town. The hotel is at the crossroads of seven railroads that used to stop at the once-vibrant Monroe County town. At one time, Brinkley had 10 hotels downtown, and the Rusher was the largest.

Like many small towns, its downtown now stands largely vacant. But then there is Low's. The restored three-story hotel is impossible to miss. The stately red brick building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stepping into the entrance is like a dream come true for any girl who wishes for a fairy-tale wedding. There's even a pale blue dress named the Cinderella for sale -- if the glass slipper fits.

SIX DRESSES AND A DRUG STORE

Prince is the daughter of Margo and Bob Low, who was a pharmacist. They owned Low's Drug Store, which is a bit of a misnomer -- in addition to typical pharmacy items, the store offered fine china, crystal, silver, jewelry, cosmetics and children's clothing. Brides would register there for china, silver and crystal. The Low family lived in a large apartment over the drug store.

Margo was at a wholesale trade market in 1977 in Dallas shopping for children's clothes when a woman asked if she would be interested in selling wedding gowns. She said she didn't think Brinkley was big enough for a bridal store. But she bought six gowns anyway and set up a bridal shop on top of the drug store. She sold all six dresses.

"The first one she sold off the floor, coming out of the box. A girl walked in and said, 'I hear you are going to sell wedding dresses.' And Mom said, 'Yes. I just got them in.' And Mom opened a box and pulled one out, and the girl said she would try it on. And that was her dress."

The bridal shop eventually took over the drug store and a nearby building. The business now offers one of the largest wedding gown selections in the country. A typical bridal shop offers 125 to 150 dresses, Prince says. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says the shop is "one of the largest bridal shops in the United States, attracting far-flung clientele to Brinkley."

In 1981, the Princes bought the Rusher Hotel and turned it into the Great Southern Hotel, a bed and breakfast and restaurant. A tornado in 1994 ripped the roof off and flooded the building.

In 1997, the Princes moved Low's Bridal to the renovated hotel, where it takes up most of the first two floors. The Brinkley Fire Department is made up of volunteers and does not have enough personnel, water pressure or equipment to fight a third-floor fire, so the third floor is used for storage.

With 2,500 dresses, fire protection is a must. Most dresses start at $1,000 and go up to $4,500. And the vast majority are wedding gowns. The store stopped selling prom, flower girl or mother of the bride dresses years ago.

"Moms are hard. Moms tend to take care of everybody else before they get to find their dress. Then they are in a panic, and they don't have time to order," Prince says. "It was really hard to take care of the bride and take care of the mom. And so to be better at what we do, we take care of the bride."

WEDDING DRESS HEAVEN

When the store was closed last year during the covid-19 pandemic, Dorcas and husband Stan rearranged the gowns. Downstairs, dresses are grouped in sizes 0 through 10. Upstairs, dresses are in sizes 12 through 34.

"We try to do a good selection for every size because girls get disappointed," Dorcas Prince says of the wide variety of sizes. "If you can't try it on, how do you figure out what style you like?" A woman who wears a size 34 can't try on a size 16 and know what she will look like in it, she says.

Despite the pandemic, Low's recorded one of its best years of sales in 2020. She attributes it to brides-to-be who didn't want to wait until the crisis was over to get married and wanted to buy a dress quickly. Before covid-19, the shop would take 65 appointments on Saturdays from brides. During covid, the shop took 45 appointments. Appointments are required, before and after the pandemic.

"You make an appointment because we work one-on-one. Every bride gets their own consultant," she says.

Styles of wedding dresses are ever-changing. Strapless gowns used to be hot. Now many women want sleeves. Some dresses are even featuring a somewhat modified puffy sleeve reminiscent of the 1980s.

"There are a lot of things that have made full circle as far as fashion. ... We have seen puff sleeves. The vast majority don't want puff, but the designers are showing it," Prince says. "Sometimes the designers are doing things that stretch the edge of the envelope to do something different. And there is not that much different to do. Somewhere in the past it has been done before."

In addition to the Cinderella, there is the Pocahontas -- a beaded number with skinny straps, plunging neckline and train -- and the Stevie Nicks -- a Bohemian look inspired by the singer.

"We have a certain percentage of girls -- it's not huge -- but we do well with black dresses. Last year and this year, Halloween falls on a weekend, and we've had a lot of girls go to New Orleans to get married or something like that. It's been kind of interesting."

What is Prince's favorite style?

"That changes every week. When we go preview dresses, it changes every six months. There are beautiful dresses of all styles. There are some of the cleanest, simple dresses that if the right person owns it, it is just magnificent," she says. "And then there is the prettiest sparkly big ballgown for the girl that's wearing it and loves it, and it is just perfect."

Angela VanZandt Bumpass decided to buy her gown at Low's for her July 2019 wedding to Rodger Bumpass. Rodger was in the same class at Little Rock Central High School with Stan Prince, and the couples are friends.

As a bride in her mid-60s, Angela wanted a dress that was age appropriate. She also wanted one that looked like something actress Audrey Hepburn would have worn.

"Dorcas is the iconic proper lady who knows all the rules that a lot of women have forgotten, so I felt safe going there that I would be getting the right look for my age," Angela Bumpass says. "Going to Low's was like going back in time, a better time, a more genteel time."

Bumpass, who is a native Arkansan living in Burbank, Calif., said she felt welcome the moment she walked through the door.

"It's the same feeling one gets when you walk into Tiffany's in New York. ... To me it was like stepping into wedding dress heaven," says Bumpass, who is a screenwriter.

WORKING FROM HOME

Prince and her husband live in an apartment on the second floor of Low's Bridal. With the exception of college, Prince has always lived where she worked.

"No matter how bad the weather is, my husband and I just walk out of the door of the apartment, and we are at work," she says.

Her first job was when she was 8 years old and made bows in the wrapping room at Low's Drug Store. At the store, she also worked on displays, was a salesperson and worked in the office. After graduating from high school she went to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to study pharmacy -- just like her father.

At UALR, she met Stan, who was studying finance.

"My husband was in the Marine Corps, and when we met in college, he asked what do you do for fun in Brinkley and I said, 'Well, my best friend and I used to go shoot snakes on rice canals.' He said, 'I don't think I've ever heard a girl say that before.'"

The Lows have two daughters. Prince's sister Rebecca was a fashion model in Italy, Japan and New York. Rebecca now lives in Dallas and is an interior decorator.

"Dad didn't have any sons, so I grew up going to deer camp, fishing, I did everything dad did," Prince says.

Dorcas and Stan married in 1980. For her own wedding, she chose a long sleeve, A-line dress with minimal pearl beading and a splash of crystals. The wedding was at a Baptist church, and the reception was across the street at her mother's house.

GETTING OUT OF TOWN

The Princes also own a home on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs. On Saturday nights, they usually head to the resort town where there are a large selection of restaurants and entertainment. Low's is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

At one point, they thought about moving their business to Memphis and even hired an architect to look at a couple of buildings they were interested in buying.

"In the end, we figured out if we move to Memphis, we lose the Little Rock business. If we move to Little Rock, we lose the Memphis business," she says.

There aren't a lot of dining options in Brinkley, and when she is asked, Prince recommends visitors try the Cottagemall and Cafe just down the street.

Beth Taylor, owner of the cafe, worked at the Great Southern Hotel from 1984-85 when it housed the restaurant and bed and breakfast. It was there that Taylor learned how to run a restaurant.

"Brinkley would be lost without Low's Bridal. It is by far the biggest drawing card we have. When I started my little cafe 16 years ago, Yelp, Tripadvisor and Google Maps were not in existence, or if they were, they were highly underutilized. Dorcas and Stan were some of my first regular diners, locals who came to eat on a daily basis," Taylor says.

"They were honest with me about what was important and gave me their input on my dishes when I asked. But more than that, they recommended my cafe to their brides. As you know, brides come from all over to 'say yes to the dress' and are always astounded that such a treasure as Low's is in our little Delta town. Without their referrals, I doubt very much that I would be in business today. They also do business with us by allowing us to cater their employee meals each week as well as their Christmas event. Low's Bridal is our unsung hero here in Brinkley.

"Personally, I admire Dorcas for so many things. She is such a lady. Strong, hardworking and very stylish. She is my mentor in so many ways," Taylor says.

Brinkley, Arkansas -- bridal gown destination of the South. It always astonishes Prince.

She has friends in New York who own a large bridal store and called her to ask what she was doing to get her shop ready to open during the covid-19 pandemic.

"We talked about all of the different things we were putting in and what they thought about doing. We talked for over an hour and a half. It was a very interesting conversation. I was like 'Why is somebody from New York City calling Brinkley, Arkansas?'" she says.

When you're a surgically trained podiatrist, the question,"What shoes should I buy?" comes up fairly often—especially after a pandemic during which everyone's sky high heels have been relegated to the backs of their closets.. And if you're Marion Parke, this question leads you on a train of thought that results in a shoe brand beloved by Dr. Jill Biden, Sara Bareilles, and Lupita Nyong'o.

Back when Parke was in school, she realized that patients who wore high heels suffered the same symptoms as those with high arches (foot and ankle instability, tight calf muscles, and claw toes). And during her three-year residency, patients would bring in bags and bags of their shoes for her to examine.

The way that Parke sees it, one way to determine your shoes level of comfort based on its construction is to look at the "bend," aka where the shoe bends when you fold the toe to the heel. "A supportive shoe will only bend at the widest part of the toe box. If a shoe bends through the arch or you can wring it out like a towel, then it's too flexible for all day wear and if you do wear it for an extended time then you'll likely experience foot soreness and fatigue," says Parke.

But before you wander off to go try the bend test, but be sure to check out the insole of your shoes as well. Though cushioning is often the first thing we think of for comfort, it is not always a solution. When used in dress shoes, extra cushioning actually has the opposite effect, causing slippage and "micro motions" that lead to soreness and fatigue over time. Parke's focus is on the insole. She sculpts all of her insoles to fit the curves and contours of the foot, without adding extra cushioning.

"This contouring increases the surface area contact between the plantar aspect of the foot and the shoe, so that weight and forces are more evenly distributed rather than focused on the forefoot and heel," she says. Extra material is added on the outside of the sole to ensure the foot has a stable and straight positioning in the shoes. But beyond those measures for comfort, Parke's materials for the insole are medical grade cushioning that are often used for prosthetics, as they have similar properties to our natural tissue and they mold to the foot over time.

After years as a podiatrist and high-heel wearer, Parke has solved the conundrum of wanting to wear heels and walk comfortably as well. In other words: it's possible pretend to be Carrie Bradshaw wearing strappy stilettos all day, and transition into an evening gathering with no problem. They are that comfortable.
