A COVID-related challenge for one Cincinnati company is turning into a blessing for high school girls in our area. That’s because Macy’s has donated more than 2,000 prom dresses to the nonprofit Kenzie’s Closet.Kenzie’s Closet started years ago, with the goal of making sure every girl could afford the prom experience.“There have always been girls in need that want to go to prom, that deserve to go to prom, they have good grades, but they just can’t afford a dress,” said executive director Kathy McDonald.Kenzie’s Closet makes it possible by outfitting girls from head to toe.The world was put on pause by COVID-19 back in the spring, right as prom dress shopping was about to start. That left Macy’s with unsold merchandise, but the retailer is paying it forward with the donation.Now, when prom season returns, hopefully in the spring, Kenzie’s Closet will be ready.“I know there were so many disappointed students that didn’t get to go to prom, that didn’t get to go to their graduations, so our hearts were kind of disappointed for them too,” McDonald said.With COVID-related closures, Kenzie’s Closet only held a few giveaway days in the spring.The dress fitting experience will change – but they plan to continue their work.
