Dress code for these N.J. students now includes their face masks. No patterns allowed. - NJ.com

A school district in Camden County with a student dress code is adding a style directive for face coverings.

Masks worn by students in Winslow Township “should be a solid color with no writings or designs,” according to the K-12 district’s reopening plan.

Whether to place restrictions on masks worn by students is among the issues facing school districts in New Jersey and across the nation as they prepare for a return to school buildings amid the coronavirus pandemic. New Jersey is requiring students, with some exceptions, to wear masks at all times.

In Charles City, Iowa, school officials said in a press release Tuesday that students may personalize their face coverings “as long as the mask isn’t vulgar or inappropriate.”

Winslow’s school mask design policy is less elaborate than the district’s longtime dress code, which takes up two pages in the student handbook and limits sweaters, vests, fleece, shirts and blouses to solid white, dark green and navy blue colors.

All of the 4,600 students in Winslow are being provided with cloth and disposable masks, the plan states, but parents may choose to purchase a face covering of their choice as long as it conforms to the policy.

Schools Superintendent H. Major Poteat told the school board last week that four face covering options — disposable masks, cloth masks, neck gaiters, and face shields — are acceptable in Winslow.

He reiterated that the design policy stipulates “all masks should be solid color, with no writing or design,” according to a video of the meeting.

Asked about Winslow’s policy, state education department spokesperson Michael Yaple said decisions on mask writings and design are up to the local districts.

While the plan also notes that teachers and other district employees must wear face coverings at all times, in keeping with state education department guidelines, it does not say whether a similar style restriction is being imposed.

The first day of school in Winslow is Sept. 3.
