Sustainable Dresses in White Inspired by Joan Smalls’ Supermodel Style - Vogue

talu.indah.link

As a long-time champion of environmental causes, Tonne Goodman – legendary stylist, former Vogue fashion director, current Vogue Sustainability editor – has always been my north star on what to buy, where to buy it, when to buy it, and how to wear it. It doesn’t hurt that she is one of the chicest women I’ve ever met and I idolize her personal style as much as I do her work for both Vogue and our planet. With Tonne’s book Point of View coming out last year, we thought a joyful way to talk about the future of fashion would be to look back to some of Tonne’s greatest shoots for Vogue and breathe new life into the looks by shopping them out from sustainable brands. This is a celebration of timelessness – good style is forever as are great wardrobe basics – and we already know Tonne’s edit will stand the test of time.

THEN:

“This was the first time I had the chance to work with Mert and Marcus,” Tonne states as we kick off our call. In the midst of possibly the weirdest summer any of us will ever know, we’ve decided to turn our attention to a true staple—and seasonal favorite—the white dress, worn effortlessly by the formidable Joan Smalls in a shoot entitled “Bodies of Work.” Continuing on, Tonne adds, “It was a great pleasure [working with Mert and Marcus] and that became a relationship that continued for many years. In terms of this shoot, it’s pretty straight forward: the biggest models of the decade—Gisele, Lara Stone, Natalia Vodianova, Raquel Zimmermann, Joan Smalls—show off their incredible physiques. The clothes were picked out to accentuate just that.” Tonne and I can’t help but pause on Joan, who is striking in the simplest of white dresses. “All of these girls are known for having a serious body,” Tonne says flipping through her saved print copy, “They have serious routines that they are known for. This was a celebration of that and the beauty of athleticism. It’s a celebration of natural beauty, and taking care of yourself.” In a time when both taking care of mental health and physical health has never been more paramount, I can’t help but feel the messaging behind this story is as relevant as the fashion itself.

NOW:

“The styling of it is very minimal because the image alone says it all; it doesn’t need any kind of embellishment,” Tonne says. Again, this picture is truly about celebrating natural beauty and sometimes the simplest of fashion choices can be the most powerful. Also, for our purposes here of discussing sustainability, there is nothing better than finding something timeless both in cut, color, and fit. So, to stay true to that narrative, we’ve kept it simple this week with two stand-out sustainable dresses, in white, to start.

Second, is this steal of a white dress from Cos. Simple, simple, simple is the mantra here but, hey, the likelihood is if you are headed out in either of these sustainable dresses, you will need to wear shoes. A barely-there sandal, like these from Brother Vellies, a brand known for their ethical labor and sustainability practices, are the perfect accessory. Barely there also means all 10 toes will be on display, which has us turning to Sundays for their super neutral, super non-toxic Number 2 nail polish.

For that finishing touch, add in a pair of small recycled-diamond studs, from Brooklyn-based Catbird. These earrings are perfect for everyday and particularly sparkle when paired with a white dress. And, on the top of sparkle, make sure to scoop up with unscented laundry detergent from one of our favorite New York destinations, The Package Free Shop. Made from all natural and organic ingredients, this 32 ounce reusable glass jar is good for 60 loads, which is helpful to know when you are planning to wear a whole lot of white.
