These Sustainable Wedding Dress Looks Are Love at First Sight - Vogue

As a longtime champion of environmental causes and sustainable fashion, Tonne Goodman—legendary stylist, former Vogue fashion director, current Vogue sustainability editor—has always been my North Star on what to buy, where to buy it, when to buy it, and how to wear it. It doesn’t hurt that she is one of the chicest women I’ve ever met, and I idolize her personal style as much as I do her work for both Vogue and our planet. With Tonne’s book, Point of View, coming out last year, we thought a joyful way to talk about the future of fashion would be to look back to some of Tonne’s greatest shoots for Vogue and breathe new life into the looks by shopping them out from sustainable brands. This is a celebration of timelessness—good style is forever, as are great wardrobe basics—and we already know Tonne’s edit will stand the test of time.

THEN:

“This shoot was all about the alter ego. The clothes all related to one another, two sides of the same coin fashion-wise,” Tonne says looking over the main fashion story of Vogue’s January 2012 issue. The picture we’ve landed on is of Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow in their finest whites amid a field of  flowers, which is giving me and Tonne serious wedding vibes. “Amber and Shalom hadn't worked together in awhile. We were in Long Island, you can see a greenhouse in the background, and we stumbled upon this amazing garden. They came together in this moment to become one of the most divine couples ever,” Tonne states, delightedly.

NOW:

Summer is nearly over and while weddings have greatly changed in shape and form due to Covid-19, celebrating friends and family is still very much on the agenda and this image has us in the mood for love. Bridal looks, and weddings in general, don’t often conjure up thoughts of sustainability. Wedding dresses are often viewed as something you wear once and stash away. But, in this new world of digital weddings, we think it’s a great time to re-think attire as much as the event. With online platforms like Matches and Net-a-Porter launching bridal capsules from some of our favorite ready-to-wear designers, bridal is more accessible and modern than ever. This image, which might not have started as a wedding shoot, is the perfect example of finding a modern, white look you love whether it’s a sharp suit, a romantic dress, or a Zoom-ready top. And if you aren’t getting ready to tie the knot, these crisp, bright pieces are the perfect end-of-summer pick-me-ups for any – and many – big days ahead.
