Dan Levy showed that all men should wear skirts - British GQ

Last night, Eugene and Dan Levy, who co-created and starred in the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek, made history by becoming the first father-and-son duo to scoop Emmys in the same year.

And they did so in style. Eugene Levy accepted his Outstanding Lead Actor award in a classic single-breasted suit by Dior, which saw him quash outmoded beliefs that black and navy should never be seen together. That said, Dan Levy went further. Wearing head-to-toe Thom Browne, the 37-year-old actor sported a skirt suit to adhere to the “come as you are” dress code that the Emmys officials laid on. In doing so, he made the case that skirts are for everyone.

This isn't the first time we've seen him wear a skirt – Levy's character, David Rose, wears a black Thom Browne skirt suit to his own wedding in the finale of Schitt's Creek, as well as throughout the series. And for us, it's further proof that the unwritten laws surrounding fashion are a-changing, if not being entirely scrapped.

In recent years, menswear has become more effeminate, more fluid and more like what we're used to seeing on women's catwalks. Leading the march are brands such as Danshan, Harris Reed, JW Anderson, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Art School, Rick Owens, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy and Maison Margiela, where men in skirts are just the start. Sheer, chest-baring tops, platform heels, floor-length dresses, crop tops and ruffles aplenty have become mainstays in recent seasons. Elsewhere, even big household brands like Dior and Louis Vuitton are proposing that men get in touch with their feminine side, putting models in pearl necklaces, hits of hot pink and, at Vuitton, ankle-skimming skirts.

Meanwhile, pop culture's finest are also changing the way that men dress, proposing a more feminine present and future. Harry Styles, Sam Smith and Troye Sivan are blurring the boundaries between menswear and womenswear with their ruched shirts and petite handbags, standing as 2020's answer to David Bowie and Boy George, while Tommy Dorfman, Marc Jacobs and Billy Porter are going all out in eye-catching gowns.

For more proof that the fashion industry is turning its gaze to a more gender-neutral future, take a look at London Fashion Week, which is currently in full swing, both digitally and physically. It has gone unisex, with shows presenting both men's and women's collections, further proving that fashion's former rigid walls are being knocked down.

With that in mind, Levy's pleated skirt may come as a shock, but it really shouldn't. Skirts are in.
