Jennifer Lopez Stuns in a Floaty Shirtdress and Knee-High Platform Boots - HarpersBAZAAR.com

talu.indah.link

Even during a global pandemic, Jennifer Lopez exudes incredible style that we're forever envious of. Having previously stepped out in the perfect Autumnal look, this weekend J.Lo opted to wear a floaty white shirtdress, which she paired with knee-high platform boots and a Coach bag.

The Hustlers star looked seriously chic in the boho-inspired look, as she stepped out for dinner in West Hollywood with her fiancé, Alex Rodriguez. Lopez completed her outfit with oversized gold hoop earrings, a face mask featuring a star, and a scrunchie, which she wore on her wrist.

This isn't the first time that J.Lo has been spotted carrying her Coach field tote, which is emblazoned with the word "vote." The superstar was previously photographed in Santa Monica with her twins, Emme and Max, as the trio went cycling together. Sharing photos from the trip on Twitter, Lopez wrote, "Voting is always in style @Coach #MyCoconuts."

Lopez recently spoke about the experiences she had breaking into the entertainment industry. During Billboard Latin Week, she revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter), "I never wanted to be put in a box. I wanted to always be a person. Look at me like I'm a person. Don’t look at me like I’m one type of person, like I’m just a Latin girl over here and I can only do these things. No, I can do anything."

"You should let me play the president of the United States," Lopez continued. "I should be able to do that."

Dress for success: The benefits of looking fresh in online meetings - The Japan Times

talu.indah.link

In case you’ve missed the office memo, it’s no longer acceptable to log into an online meeting looking tired and disheveled.

In pre-pandemic days, many workers arguably had a legitimate reason to show up at work looking a little worse for wear. If the morning commute wasn’t horrific enough, a number of people were either still fighting off the lethargy that accompanies a late night working overtime or the aftereffects of a hangover that is the result of after-work drinks that stretched long into the evening.

These days, however, such convenient excuses have all but disappeared. Many workers are now spending an unprecedented amount of time in front of their computer cameras speaking to online audiences, and the pressure is on employees to be bright-eyed and spruced up for the occasion. Older men for whom personal grooming has never been a priority are facing increasing pressure to look professional in online meetings.

News website Nikkei.com recommends that men spend a little time investing in their appearance, especially their skin and hair, as a disheveled look can be damaging to their professional image.

Social media is now full of men — most of them in their 20s and early 30s — posting shots of their favorite grooming products.

There’s certainly no shortage of websites and blogs that offer advice on online etiquette. Leapahedge.com advises men to don a shirt with a collar and women to wear a blouse, recommending outfits that don’t need ironing. Kigyolog.com says readers should check the position of the camera in order to look their best, fix stray hair ends, straighten backs and keep facial expressions positive at all times.

A straight back is one thing, but many men are arguably more interested in looking attractive, energetic and 10 years younger than their real age. Last year, the men’s cosmetics market hit close to ¥120 billion in sales revenue. This year, the figure is expected to be even higher.

More men have been staying home since the state of emergency was declared earlier this year, which means less money is being spent on traditional male hobbies such as attending sports games. As a result, men have been able to spend more time and money on personal care. Indeed, more men are looking to optimize the remote work experience with glowing skin, clear eyes and glossy lips.

“Men need skin care products just as much as women in order to look clean, smart and presentable during online meetings,” one Twitter user notes and, honestly speaking, who could really disagree with that?

Meanwhile, Twitter user @choco says men should look at the products on display in the conventional women’s aisles.

“Don’t be put off by the labels, buy women’s cosmetics — they work much better than male only stuff,” @choco writes. “And, while we’re at it, why not open up the market and make cosmetic products available to whoever wants them?”

Thirty-eight-year old Kota Mitsuhashi is an example of a man who has discovered the joys of grooming during the stay-home period. Initially, cosmetics were probably the farthest thing from his mind. During the state of emergency, Mitsuhashi bought a high-end swivel chair for his back.

“I work in the aerospace industry and spend most of my waking hours hunched in front of a computer,” Mitsuhashi tells The Japan Times. “I needed to make myself comfortable or I would never get through the workload.”

He later bought a small desk and a partition that separated his workspace from the family living room, and proceeded to meet his deadlines. This worked well for a period of time until he caught sight of himself in a mirror one day and saw an old, tired man with bad posture staring back at him.

“It was a revelation,” he recalls. “I had neglected my personal appearance for far too long, and I was paying the price.”

On the advice of his wife, Mitsuhashi bought a bottle of men’s skin lotion, wrinkle cream and a concealer to apply to the dark circles under his eyes.

“Concealers are wonderful,” he says. “I can now hold my head up high during online meetings and speak to my colleagues with confidence.”

It wasn’t all good news, however, and Mitsuhashi suddenly began to realize how expensive cosmetics products are.

“I never knew how much time and effort my wife was putting in to look good,” Mitsuhashi says, echoing similar statements on social media. “I’m taking care not to overdo it because I really can’t afford it.”

That bottle of skin lotion Mitsuhashi purchased, by the way, was ¥3,800, and the 38-year-old was last seen debating whether or not to switch to a cheaper brand.

He’s certainly not alone in wanting cheaper cosmetics products.

“If more men bought cosmetics, it would make the companies more competitive and we would have access to cheaper products,” wrote one person on Twitter recently. “I wish that day would come soon.”

Dress to Address: Why Fashion is Indeed Political - International Policy Digest

talu.indah.link

Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “vote” necklace. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s red lipstick. Fashion is indeed political. For one, dressing up each day is a form of self-expression, just as the act of having to assert your ideals and values as women. I believe that the key is not to embrace clothing just simply as trends or things that are considered frivolous, but to also tell a story of how fashion is indeed political.

When I was living in Washington DC, I once entered a meeting room on Capitol Hill filled with men wearing ill-fitted suits. I quickly realized from that moment on, I was truly living in the nation’s capital. A city defined by frenzied elite politics, the narrow margin between activism and power, all the while being ruled by people who looked up to the muses of Olivia Pope (Scandal) or Claire Underwood (House of Cards). At that time, it was early fall and I was wearing my father’s hand-me-downed blazer which I combined with a layered dress. Of course, I know I got “the look.” Initially, I thought it was because either I was late, I was the only woman, or I was the only non-caucasian women. Or so that’s what I thought. It was also because of the way I dressed.

In a city built for power, there is an excruciatingly narrow margin for acceptable female dresses. All women, no matter how many postgraduate degrees they have or who they know, they still walk an inescapable fashion tightrope. I have always been a huge advocate of not only “wearing your heart on your sleeves, but also wearing your values on your sleeves.” That is, I am not dressing up for anyone else but myself. However, in the line of work that I am in, unfortunately, to elevate my voice as a woman which is easily unheard of, I need to think of other ways to do it. And that is through clothes.

For the longest period of time, the way politicians dress has been associated with two things: male pant-suit and high-end pieces. In other words, it is elitist and created for men. The term “power dressing” has come a long way from shoulder-padded black trouser suits and stilettos. It has evolved into something more. However, the principles remain the same- and it’s called “soft power dressing.” Or the act of using fashion and jewelry to communicate something especially when you are used to not being heard. Truly “soft power dressing” is a palatable persuasion more effective than force. And “power dressing” itself is defined as the fashion style that enables women to establish their authority in a professional and political environment traditionally dominated by men.

Initially, power dressing consisted of a conservative style recalling directly the male wardrobe including tailored suits, jackets with padded shoulders, roll-neck sweaters, and knee-length skirts. With the power dressing uniform, the female body was divided into two parts: The upper part covered by a jacket to de-emphasize breasts, the bottom covered with a skirt that was a reminder of femininity.

We’ve come a long way. Today, power dressing is designed to let the inner power of a woman come through. Power dressing locates power at the body level giving a message about women and their profession, enclosing at the same time something about self-esteem and confidence.

Power dressing thus attempts to counterbalance a woman’s natural femininity and inherent sexuality, with the goal of preventing the sexual misinterpretation through her clothes that might otherwise allow. This is because if politics induces power, then so can femininity.

For the longest time, women in political positions have been subjugated to how they dress and their choice of clothing. Thus, I believe that we have been underestimating the art of dressing up. If the COVID-19 pandemic teaches us anything, it is that the way we value getting ready every day, planning an outfit the night before, truly speaks more about the decisions we make in our lives more than we initially thought of.

Take AOC as an example. The young congresswoman is not only a force to be reckoned with in flipping the table on Capitol Hill, but also how women of colour should dress. During her swearing-in, she decided to don a white pantsuit completed with light gold hoop earrings and red matte lipstick. She was not only paying tribute to honour women suffragettes and the movement, but she also brings her own twist to masculine power suiting.

Fashion, politics, and fighting for gender equality are intrinsically intertwined. We have seen how much fashion has been such a political statement, whether it be the reclamation of our power by wearing jeans or really pushing against the idea of what is considered “feminine” or any character trait. I truly believe that the notion can be either. Therefore, I feel like the two go hand-in-hand, and overarchingly it is a form of self-expression. Because to be able to reclaim your space while reclaiming your aesthetic, is power.

Black couple accuses restaurant of dress code discrimination | NewsChannel 3-12 - KEYT

Georgia, USA (WGCL) — A video has gone viral, showing a black man being asked to leave Umi Sushi restaurant. Staff said he violated the dress code, by wearing sneakers.

You hear the customer say “This is pure racism she has on Adidas.”

The man and his wife—Kaylan Colbert—say they were about to leave the Buckhead business, when they noticed a white woman at the bar also wearing sneakers.

Customer: “White lady has on adidas, I have on Nike… you tell me I can’t sit down that’s not right.”

Employee: “He’s saying that it’s dress sneakers, so I have to go with what he says.”

You then see another man walk out of the restaurant in a T-shirt and tennis shoes, saying he’s the owner.

Customer: “Does she have on a sneaker?”

Owner: “Who does?”

Customer: “This lady at the bar. C’mon come..”

Owner: “ (inaudible) There’s no Air Force Ones.”

“I don’t think I can say this wasn’t necessarily based on color, I think it was but I think it was kind of more or less he’s a big black guy and he looks aggressive and he has on these tennis shoes we don’t want him in here,” said Kaylan Colbert.

After numerous emails and messages asking the owner to speak—CBS46 journalist Brittany Miller, went looking for him at the restaurant. She was told he wasn’t there, so she left her contact information.

The owner, later popped up on Instagram Live, with Rapper T.I.

“We were 100% wrong at our operational and the way we handled the situation,” said the owner.

He also said he plans to remove the no sneaker policy.

Colbert said she’s not accepting his apology anytime soon.

However, CBS46 has learned that she and her husband met with local activists and rapper T.I. Thursday night to discuss next steps.

Despite an incredibly unprecedented 2020, global pandemic, widespread social unrest and murder hornets, one thing remains constant: Seattleites still love dressing up their dogs for Halloween.

According to a recent study by Seattle-based Rover, a marketplace for people to buy and sell pet care services, 66% of dog owners say they still plan to dress up their dog(s) for Halloween this year.

"These days, it's the little things that keep us going," Rover reported. "Even if it is just a cute pug dressed up like a loaf of sourdough."

The house skirt is back — and this is how to wear it - The Times

talu.indah.link

As we now understand, looking for moments of light in a global pandemic is as fruitless as trying to find meaning in an episode of Emily in Paris. Pity the poor fashion writer trying to pitch “party” season, flogging sequins and platform heels to a world shut in, basking in the swaddled comfort of a tracksuit.

And yet, as much as I’ll never look at a piece of banana bread ever again, I would lick every lamppost within a five-mile radius before accepting more loungewear. No! We must bring an end to this leggings malaise. I give you, instead, the house skirt.

But aside from the surreal, virtual exhibition space, the costumes highlighted hold their own. The Queen's Gambit may be the newer project, but with its 1950s and early 60s costumes and exploration of elegant destinations, it's a visual treat, especially given the current travel restrictions. In telling the story of Beth Harmon, an orphan-turned-chess-master played by Anya Taylor-Joy who electrifies the game's male-dominated scene, recreates the mood of an era while providing insight into the protagonist's troubled mind. "She comes from this poor background and an orphanage, where she didn't have a context for fashion, so it's something she's had to discover on her own," says costume designer Gabriele Binder. "I always tried to have her be outstanding and different from everyone else around her, whether at school or in [chess] where all the other players are men."

The complexity of the period's gender dynamics and Beth's eventual descent into addiction had to be worked into Taylor-Joy's costumes, several of which had multiple versions depending on the scenes’ level of tumult. "That was fun because there's one side of her is glamorous and another that is destroyed," says Binder, who referenced designers like Pierre Cardin and Saint Laurent while creating. "We have a dress that is very Cardin, but it's created in this fabric that is too heavy, instead of something that would have been used during that era. We wanted to show how Beth's life had gotten too heavy." The drama may be intense, but Binder allowed for fun moments and a playful chessboard motif that carries through Beth's entire wardrobe. "There is no perhaps in chess. It's about contrasts: black or white, win or lose," she says. "I thought we needed that minimalism and the ’60s have so much of that in looks from Mondrian, Cardin, and Saint Laurent. I wanted to connect the fashion with the game because it's the most important thing in her life, and she would intuitively seek out [clothes] that mirror it."

4-year-old twin girls dress up as Trump and Biden ahead of Halloween, 2020 election - fox6now.com

talu.indah.link

A pair of 4-year-old twins were the spitting image of the two 2020 presidential candidates in creative, politically themed Halloween costumes ahead of Election Day.

Pictures and footage posted to social media showed sisters Haven and Koti Garza, who live in Edmond, Oklahoma, dressed as rivals President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

“They love dressing up, whether in regular clothes or costumes! We had five different costumes planned for this year,” Adrea Garza, the twins’ mom, told FOX TV Stations.

Sisters Haven and Koti Garza dressed up as this year’s presidential candidates, president Donald Trump and former vice president Joe Biden.

Garza revealed that the twins were born right before the election in 2016. “I knew that in 4 years, I was going to dress them as the candidates,” Garza said.

Garza said she gained inspiration from the first presidential debate.

“I hunted down some boys’ suits. Found some flag pins, and knew I had to put Biden in a mask and his signature aviator sunglasses. Finally, I slicked back my brunette twin’s hair and sprayed it with white hairspray. That was her favorite part,” Garza said.

“I added the ‘spray tan’ for President Trump and combed over my blonde twin’s hair. To finish out the look, she added the signature pouty lips and thumbs up!“

The social media posts have already garnered millions of views, and Garza said she was shocked by the reaction.

“I thought they were cute costumes, but I had no idea how overwhelming the response would be. It’s incredible,” Garza said.

As for whether the twins will dress up as the vice presidential candidates, it may take some more convincing.

“No plans to dress them as the VP candidates, but they will be dressing as the candidates four years from now, whoever they may be,” Garza said.

Struthers principal addresses petition at elementary school to dress up for Halloween - WKBN.com

talu.indah.link
Local News

Instead of their typical Fall Fest, the elementary school held a four-day event with COVID-19 precautions in mind

Halloween

(WKBN) – Struthers Elementary has a tradition called “Fall Fest” in which students get the opportunity to dress up in their Halloween costumes and parade around the perimeter of the school. During that, family members can come to see the students in their costumes.

The school decided that wouldn’t be a good idea this year with the pandemic going on. School officials wanted to make sure everyone was socially distant. The children might also need assistance with costumes throughout the day, which might require a teacher’s help, and they wanted to limit that as much as possible.

People were upset about not being able to wear the costumes, and so a petition was started. Principal Dennis Hynes said it was great that people used their democratic process, but safety is the priority so they thought of another way to celebrate the holiday and have some fun.

“We tried to make it a four-day event and have a Fall Fest week,” said Hynes. “It wasn’t done in any other way than to protect them but yet still give them an alternative to have…a great week is really what we tried to do.”

On Monday, students were given white coronavirus masks to decorate in class. The next day was “Tacky Tuesday,” so students were encouraged to mismatch their clothes. Wednesday was “It’s fall y’all,” so students dressed in a western theme, according to Hynes.

Thursday, students wore black and orange shirts and the masks they created on Monday. Hynes also said the middle school did something similar to the elementary school for the week.

“Normally, we have the high school students come over and help the students get in costume. Well, you can’t do that this year,” said Hynes. “A lot of times, our PTA and volunteers would come in, and we’d assign them to a classroom…they would help the kids put their costumes on, again, you can’t do that this year. You can’t have volunteers in the school.”

They discussed having the students be in costume all day long, but they decided that might be difficult for younger students.

“We want to have a little bit of fun in a situation like this. We don’t want to take away the fun from them, we really don’t, and I felt horrible that we had to do that, but we also have to have the safety of the students throughout the day,” said Hynes.

He said he’s looking forward to next year so they can bring back Fall Fest the way it’s always been.

“They went through the democratic process…I commend them for wanting to at least express themselves. We heard them and we appreciate it, but at the same time, when it’s all said and done, we have to…things are just a little different this year, that’s all,” said Hynes.

The petition was made through change.org, and as of Friday morning, had just under 500 of the 1,000 signatures needed.

“I don’t want anybody to think we were trying to be rude or mean in any way, we weren’t doing that,” said Hynes.

Bear with. The key is to adopt a more Moira Rose (of Schitt’s Creek fame — do watch it) attitude to reduced

Indie Basement (10/30): Midnight Oil, Suede, The Style Council, Vivien Goldman, Mini Skirt, more - Brooklyn Vegan

talu.indah.link

We've got a scary five days in store between Halloween (on a full moon!) and the election on Tuesday and if you need some new music to soundtrack the terror, or to alleviate things, Indie Basement is here for you. This week: Aussie greats Midnight Oil return with their first record in nearly two decades; while newer Aussie band Mini Skirt would probably make a good, very different opener for them; "Punk Professor" Vivien Goldman returns with her first new music in decades; and there are new retrospectives out for Suede and The Style Council.

If you need more new album reviews, this week Andrew looks at Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou, War on Women and more in Notable Releases. More Basement-approved stuff from this week: Sleaford Mods just announced their new album and the first single features Billy Nomates; Bill Callahan, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan covered Billie Eilish (and it's awesome); Crowded House are back; and there's a Gang of Four box set on the way.

Also: I may have dressed prep in the '80s but I danced to Sisters of Mercy. I put together a list of Classic Goth's 13 Greatest Albums (according to me) and also 13 Great '80s Goth Songs by artists who didn't appear on the LPs list.

Otherwise, have as great a weekend as possible, please vote (if you haven't already), and I'll be back next week in either a much better or much worse mood. As will we all, probably.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Mini Skirt - CASINO (self-released)
Your new favorite rough-and-tumble Australian mullet punk band, with deep lyrics to boot

Not all killer Aussie garage punk comes out of Melbourne. Here are Mini Skirt who hail from the southeastern surf town of Byron Bay, NSW. First things first, Mini Skirt is not a very good name, certainly not for a bunch of rough-and-tumble blokes who make urgent, bash-it-out pub punk while gripping cans of beer. But try and get past it, 'cause they're great and after five years and a few singles, Mini Skirt finally got around to making an album, the most excellent CASINO.

Musically, Mini Skirt are primal, drawing from 50 years of astringent rock, from MC5/Stooges to Sham 69 and The Fall to Sonic Youth, The Saints, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, etc. It's the sound of guitars played very loud with the levels burning hot, no fuzzboxes necessary, and you can feel the energy in the recording which was mixed and mastered by -- no surprise -- Mikey Young of Total Control/ECSR. You can tell this is exactly what Mini Skirt sound like at one of their shows, which probably happen in the corner of a bar without a stage or much of a PA system.

The real surprise though is frontman Jacob Boylan. He's a raw-throated howler with an unmistakable Aussie accent, but underneath that craggy bark is a thoughtful lyricist and a keen observer who is not afraid to hold a mirror up to his part of the world, including himself. Songs are socially conscious but not preachy or condescending, and are told from a decidedly working class POV. He tries to live a considerate, positive life in "Brigantine St" but finds obstacles at every corner: "I want to believe in the revolution / I want to believe in my contribution / But the bastards keep winning!" On "Face of the Future," he finds idiots everywhere he turns, the right and left, and wonders "Does it get you hard, spitting in the face of the future?" over a pummelling descending riff. The record also touches on colonialism, macho bullshit, PC culture and more, all with a nuanced touch. If you're just here for the rippers, CASINO seriously delivers but it's an even more satisfying record for those who really listen.

Midnight Oil - The Makarrata Project (Sony Legacy)
Eighteen years since their last album, Midnight Oil are as fiery as ever on a record that has them collaborating with indigenous Australian artists (and championing their causes)

In 1986, Midnight Oil embarked on the "Blackfella/Whitefella" tour of the Australian outback, taking indigenous groups Warumpi Band and Gondwanaland with them to play Aboriginal communities. The experience fundamentally changed the already very politically charged band, resulting in 1988's Diesel & Dust that broke the band worldwide and included songs like "The Dead Heart," about the "Stolen Generations" of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly taken from their families by the Australian government in a misguided attempt at assimilation.

Those issues -- colonialism, stolen lands -- still face Australia and are at the heart of The Makarrata Project, Midnight Oil's first record in 18 years. It's named after, and all proceeds benefit, the Makarrata Commision which hopes to "supervise a process of agreement-making" between the current Australian government and First Nations people. The record was produced by their Diesel & Dust collaborator Warne Livesay but unlike that record, Midnight Oil have invited many indigenous artists to collaborate and play on The Makarrata Project, including Alice Skye, Kev Carmody, Leah Flanagan, Sammy Butcher, Dan Sultan, and more. The record also features the late artist Gurrumul, who died in 2017 but whose family gave the band unheard vocal recordings to use.

There are the kind of strident, anthemic rock songs you've come to expect from Midnight Oil here, like first single "Gadigal Land" and closing track "Come on Down," but every song features indigenous musicians prominently. "Wind in My Head," which has a "Dead Heart" feel to it, features spoken word parts from Kev Carmody & Sammy Butcher, while Alice Skye sings lead on "Terror Australia." Opening track "First Nation" dropsa rap from Tasman Keith into the middle of it. This might not exactly sound like a typical Midnight Oil record, but in other ways it's exactly what would bring them back in the studio. They are as inspired, and angry as ever and, as a statement, The Makarrata Project's power and passion is undeniable.

Suede - The Beautiful Ones (Demon)
Glammy Britpop hitmakers get a new best-of comp in a variety of formats and sizes, from "just the hits, thanks" to a six-LP set.

When it comes to Britpop, people's minds tend to head to Oasis, Blur and maybe Pulp, but let's not forget Suede, the glammy group who were named the "Best New Band in Britain" by UK music weekly Melody Maker before they had even released their first single. Singer Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler were regularly referred to as the new Morrissey and Marr, and the band's suave, sophisticated guitar pop more often than not lived up to the hype. (One comparison to The Smiths that was dead-on: Suede released some of their best songs as b-sides.) Suede had a headstart on Britpop, releasing their debut single "The Drowners" in 1992, and they scored 20 hit UK singles and five hit albums (three of which debuted at # 1 on the UK charts) before calling it quits in 2003. During that time they also survived the departure of Bernard Butler right before the release of their second album, Dog Man Star, and actually became more popular with their next album, Coming Up. After a seven year break, the band got back together in 2010 for some festival shows and decided to keep going, and have made three very good albums since (2018's The Blue Hour being the most recent).

A decade since reforming seems like a good time to release a new retrospective and here we have The Beautiful Ones, a nice new compilation that's available in a few different permutations, for everyone from the casual fan to the die-hards. The most basic version is the 21-track two-disc vinyl set which collects most of, but not all of, their original run singles, including cheeky early classics like "The Drowners," "Metal Mickey," and "Animal Nitrate," fantastic stand-alone single "Stay Together," Dog Man Star faves "We Are the Pigs" and "The Wild Ones," to shiny post-Butler smashes like "Trash," "The Beautiful Ones," and "Electricity." There are also tracks off the three recent albums like "Barriers," "It Starts and Ends with You" and "Wastelands." Missing: "Attitude," which was the "new song" on 2003 Singles comp and "Positivity," the first single from 2002's A New Morning.

The two-disc CD set, meanwhile, has all the songs from the vinyl edition, plus an additional 13 songs, including some of their best b-sides, including "To the Birds," "My Insatiable One," "Killing of a Flashboy." (It's a bit of a mashup between Singles and b-sides collection Sci-Fi Lullabies.) Then there are the deluxe 6-vinyl-disc and 4-CD sets, which both have the same 56 tracks, selected by the band, including the same 21 "hits" plus a wider selection of b-sides and album deep cuts, with eight of Dog Man Star's 12 songs represented (clearly the band's favorite album). The deluxe CD set also comes with a 36 page booklet featuring lyrics and memorabilia submitted by fans -- the vinyl set has all the same stuff on the six albums' inner sleeves. Even if you only know the big songs, I'd still recommend the deluxe sets, as Suede dropped so many great songs where you'd least expect. Their catalog is worth exploring, and their albums have all held up remarkably well -- even the songs from Head Music, which I wasn't crazy about at the time, sound pretty good now.

Unfortunately for American fans, only the double disc CD and vinyl sets are available in the States (and they also say "The London Suede" which they were forced to call themselves here, though no fan ever did). You can however get the deluxe version via Amazon.co.uk (and shipping is not actually too bad). The Beautiful Ones is not on streaming services per se, but someone did put together a Spotify playlist, and added a few extra tracks to boot (like "Attitude" and "Positivity"):

The Style Council – Long Hot Summers: The Story of The Style Council (Polydor)
Paul Weller's jazzy, R&B-flavored, politically motivated post-Jam band with Mick Talbot gets a new retrospective.

The Jam were superstars in England in the late-'70s and early-'80s and, at 23-years old when his band were at the height of popularity, frontman Paul Weller decided to end it and try something new. Inspired in part by Blue Note jazz, Weller envisioned a group that had a rotating arsenal of members who could do anything, play anything, not constrained by genre or what the public wanted. He pitched the idea to Mick Talbot, keyboard player in Dexy's Midnight Runners, who said yes, as they bonded not just over this idea but film and fashion (French New Wave for both), and politics. The Style Council were born.

Picking up somewhat from where The Jam were heading on singles like "Absolute Beginners" and "A Town Called Malice," Weller & Talbot took The Style Council into musically lighter territory: cocktail jazz, Motown-style R&B, soul, and even rap, while rocking a look right out of Breathless. “Nothing was off limits, it was very fluid,” Paul said. “I was enthusiastic, I found inspiration everywhere.” Lyrically, though, Weller railed against Margaret Thatcher, racism, and for socialist ideals. On "Shout it to the Top," one of The Style Council's best singles (#7 in the UK), Weller sings "Make no mistake / this is all class war / fight back / shout to the top" over sultry, string-filled disco backing. They transformed their horn-filled zippy "Have You Ever Had it Blue" single into fiery polemic "With Everything to Lose" on their second and best album, Our Favorite Shop. Weller was waging war with suave, subversive style.

The Style Council only lasted six years, give or take, and Weller's ambition and arrogance sometimes meant some ill-considered experiments (rap), but the group's high's were very high, including the wonderfully breezy "My Ever Changing Moods" and "Have You Ever Had it Blue," slow-jams "The Long Hot Summer" and "You're the Best Thing," joyous revolution anthem "The Walls Come Tumbling Down," and the soulful "Speak Like a Child" and "The Lodgers." Standalone 1987 single "Promised Land," a cover of Joe Smooth's house hit, signalled a new dance direction for the group, but when they turned in their sixth album in 1989 to Polygram, the label refused to release it. (It finally saw the light of day in 1998.) When that happened, and with Thatcher having won a third term as Prime Minister, Weller felt the wind leave his sails, and brought an end to The Style Council.

If you've never dipped into their jazzy world, now is a good time to do so with the release of Long Hot Summers: The Story of The Style Council, which Weller and Talbot oversaw and picked the 37 songs for, and got superfan Martin Freeman (Tim on the original British version of The Office) to write an essay for. These songs hold up really well, and his linen-wardrobed vision of revolution is still pretty appealing.

Vivien Goldman - "I Have a Voice"
The first new single in decades from the great post-punk artist, journalist and Punk Professor takes aim at the U.S. election.

Vivien Goldman is a legend in a couple different, related, disciplines. She's an authority on reggae, having worked with Bob Marley at Island Records in the '70s (she was his first publicist), before becoming a music writer for Sounds, NME and other publications, and then later ended up working for the UK's Channel Four. At the same time she was a musician, having been a member of arch, arty synthpop/post-punk group The Flying Lizards as well as new wave duo Chantage, and her own solo work includes the classic 1981 single "Laundrette" that features Robert Wyatt and was co-produced by PiL's John Lydon and Keith Levene. She's an adjunct professor of Punk and Reggae at NYU. Last year she released the fantastic book, Revenge of the She-Punks: A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot.

It's been a while since Vivien has made music herself, but she's been getting back into it. She opened for Cate Le Bon at Brooklyn club Elsewhere in 2019, and now she's just released "I Have a Voice," her first new single in decades, inspired by the impending US election. “I wrote this song in 2019, in London,” Goldman says. “Then as now, people were arguing about Brexit and Trump and the existential sense of uncertainty was much more intense than when punks sang No Future in the 1970s. Many obstacles are being put in the way of people voting in America now, but we must keep our energy and persistence up to make the change we need. We have a voice.”

The original is a delicate, searing, string-laden piano ballad but there are a few remixes including the killer "Toby & Youth Bristol Bass Dub" and the "Lore Meltdown Bass Dub" that puts a drum-n-bass spin on the track. Check those out and the music video, which features images from this year's many protests, below.

"I Have a Voice" also serves as a preview for a new album, titled Next is Now which will be out in 2021. Can't wait.

Watches: A New Dress For Success Phenomenon For American Men - Forbes

talu.indah.link

We’re in the age of a new dress for success phenomenon. Sure, there are still jackets-required office-attire as data proves that productivity increases when an office has a polished dress code. Verily, competition is high and I find it of the utmost importance to power dress for the job - if you wish to stand out and progress.

Along the way into the new challenges that we now face in the world, something happened: American men started to give business attire a newly founded respect and the watch industry started setting the stage for the next big power move in product offerings. In my estimation, a business man should always wear a watch to the office. In fact, these days, executives frolic with so many new options, both high and low.

In the watch market segmentation, this decade will be famous for its unique product assortments that display a serious power stance that remains perfectly unrivaled with models of the past. And when it comes to dressing for corporate ascension, it is refreshing to sport a stellar watch that goes beyond your limits in style. The resulting vibe will be decidedly on point in the boardroom while maintaining a balanced and polished look; a sophistication that your superiors and co-workers will appreciate.

I reviewed a few examples of watches below with both high and low price tags. In my opinion, the secret weapon in dressing for success is the watch. It is a not only a power statement of a well-dressed man, but rather a form of respect to both yourself and to the company who employs you.

Burger King France Is Inviting Trick-or-Treaters to Dress Up Their Cars for a Discount - Adweek

talu.indah.link

While dressing up and making rounds in the neighborhood for candy may not be safe this year, Burger King France is encouraging customers to step on the gas and knock on their local drive-thru’s door instead.

As part of its Whoppeuuur Drive campaign, customers can deck out their wheels on Halloween and visit the restaurant for a 20% discount. Burger King is also offering a special prize to the best-dressed ride shared on social media.

The campaign, which was created by DAVID Madrid, offers up some car costume inspiration. It features a ghost, wrapped in all that leftover quarantine toilet paper, and a vampire with a fang bumper and streaks of blood. The spot also features a spooky, unexplained “forgotten fries” car as a warning to any customers to never let a Burger King Meal go to waste.

Over the years, the franchise has found memorable ways to reach its customers on Halloween, giving free Whoppers to patrons in clown costumes, introducing a Ghost Whopper and dressing up its Queens location as the ghost of McDonald’s.

According to Constance de Vasselot, group manager of family marketing at Burger King France, this year was no exception.

“With Whoppeuuur Drive, we’re offering families a fun, creative, and responsible alternative to going door-to-door trick-or-treating,” she said.

This year, Burger King Sweden and Denmark are also celebrating Halloween by throwing shade at the competition. In select restaurant bathrooms, a cross between Ronald McDonald and Bloody Mary appears when customers say “canceled clown” aloud three times. This marketing stunt aligns with Burger King’s tongue-in-cheek tradition of trolling its biggest rival. One stunt did draw the ire of some for being insensitive to businesses failing during a pandemic. The “Scary Places” campaign calls on customers to drive to a variety of dilapidated, abandoned fast-food restaurants and use Burger King’s mobile app to get a coupon for a free Whopper.

According to Saulo Rocha, the executive creative director of DAVID Madrid, the Whoppeuuur Drive campaign is a reflection of the franchise’s ability to inspire light-heartedness and maintain a sense of humor during the pandemic.

“We are very proud to be able to support this brand that constantly shows empathy and relevance to its customers,” he said. “With Whoppeuuur Drive, French families will continue to enjoy Halloween together.”
