A few weeks ago, Harry Styles broke the internet (again) after Vogue unveiled the photos from his recent cover shoot. The One Direction member is not only the first solo male to appear on the magazine’s cover, but he did so while wearing a dress.

The Vogue cover quickly earned both praise and backlash from commentators. While many commended Styles for helping to break the gender fashion norms, others argued that men shouldn’t wear feminine attire. Now, Styles himself has responded to the criticism in the best way possible.

Over the years, Styles has truly shown off his androgynous style. From wearing glittery suits onstage to using a purse and painting his fingernails, Styles is one of many individuals expressing themselves regardless of gender clothing stereotypes.

For his new Vogue photoshoot, Styles continued to do just that. He can be seen in various lavish dresses and accessories that are considered to be feminine.

“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away,” he told Vogue. “There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes. I’ve never really thought too much about what it means—it just becomes this extended part of creating something.”

Despite the praise Styles received for helping break fashion norms, many individuals believe he shouldn’t have worn a dress at all. In particular, conservative figure Candace Owens’ comment became one of the more popular ones on social media. She argued that men need to be more “manly” and stop wearing feminine clothing.

“There is no society that can survive without strong men. The East knows this. In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence. It is an outright attack. Bring back manly men.”

Now, Styles has indirectly responded to both Owens’ comment and the criticism he received. On Wednesday, he shared a photo of him in a feminine suit on social media. However, it’s the post’s caption that is raising eyebrows and sparking the debate once again.

“Bring back manly men.”

Soon after the photo was shared, “Harry Styles” began trending on Twitter. As well, Owens quickly shared her thoughts on the post. In a tweet, Owens gives herself credit for influencing the criticism surrounding Styles’ Vogue shoot. However, Harry Styles stans are reminding Owens that the “Watermelon Sugar” singer is seemingly poking fun at her stance on the photos.

“When people try to tell me I don’t have influence, and then @Harry_Styles dedicates an entire post to my tweet. I inspire global conversation. #BringBackManlyMen Shots fired.”

In the midst of all of this, it looks like the world really enjoyed Harry Styles’ latest album Fine Line in 2020. The album is officially the fourth most-streamed LP on Spotify in the world this year. Bad Bunny’s YHLQMDLG came in at No.1 with over 3.3 billion streams. The Weeknd’s After Hours, Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding and Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia are also included on the list.
