In our series My Monday Morning, self-motivated people tell WSJ. how they start off the week.
Kerry Washington has spent part of the pandemic recording Christmas carols in her closet. The actor, 43, sang a lot growing up and throughout college but hadn’t done so professionally. That changed at the beginning of this year, when filming began for The Prom, the Netflix musical directed by Ryan Murphy about Emma (played by Jo Ellen Pellman), a gay teen in a small Indiana town who wants to bring her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose), to the prom. Washington plays Alyssa’s mom; the movie also stars Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden. When the pandemic put filming on pause earlier this year, Washington didn’t want to stop singing. “I suddenly had a renewed relationship with a singing coach,” she says. “It’s been wonderful having singing back in my life.” (The Christmas carols she sang in her closet were then filmed for The Disney Holiday Singalong which aired on ABC last week.)
Washington is perhaps best known for her role as powerful D.C. fixer Olivia Pope on Scandal, which aired on ABC from 2012-2018. She founded her production company Simpson Street, named for the Bronx block her mother grew up on, in 2016. Earlier this year, she starred in the Emmy-nominated Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere alongside Reese Witherspoon; both stars were also producers. This year she also hosted the third night of the Democratic National Convention and traveled around the country to encourage citizens to vote.
Here, she tells WSJ. about homeschooling and distance learning with her kids; how she designed her own prom dress in high school; and a conversation with her friend Regina King that inspired her new jewelry collaboration.
What time do you wake up on Mondays, and what’s the first thing you do?
