While a tree skirt might not be as much of a centerpiece as, say, your Christmas-tree topper, it does create a festive backdrop for your Christmas gifts — as well as hide an ugly tree stand. And though the classic red and white skirt will do the trick just fine, less ubiquitous styles, like a wicker tree collar or quilted skirt, are harder to find. In an effort to find the most tasteful tree skirts on the market, we reached out to two Hallmark holiday-movie set decorators to recommend their favorite ones (including the very tree skirt used in the Obama family’s White House). But with Christmas just over two weeks away, most of their stylish recommendations were, naturally, already sold out. With their advice in mind, we found the best still-in-stock tree skirts — from shibori-dyed ones to handwoven tree collars — that should still arrive before Christmas (but if you want to guarantee arrival before December 25, consider expedited shipping).
If you aren’t sure which size tree skirt you might need, we’ve found that 48 to 60 inches is the right size for a standard 7.5-foot Christmas tree. We suggest sizing down for anything smaller than five feet and sizing up for any tree larger than eight feet.
For a classic holiday-movie-approved option, Hallmark-movie set decorator Samantha Skidmore — who works by her maiden name Samantha Twist — likes this minimalist (and budget friendly) one from Walmart. “It’s a cute, more modern tree skirt that still has a homey feel with the stars embroidered onto it,” she says, adding, “the embroidery is great if you don’t want a plain skirt.”
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 16.
In keeping with the faux-snow style, Skidmore also recommends this all-white faux-fur one. “This is the type we have in my house,” she shares. “It’s supercute and adds texture to a room, which I think is very important. It reminds me of snow, and it’s just a great neutral.”
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 10.
Another neutral option, this braided hand-knit tree skirt has just enough texture without looking too rustic, and the sweater-inspired knit would look especially cozy underneath Christmas gifts.
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 11.
And for a smaller setup, this 34-inch hand-knit tree skirt in a cheery bright red will look festive underneath any Christmas tree.
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 15.
“Tree collars are a little less common compared to skirts, but that isn’t a bad thing,” says Skidmore. “I think if you have a small space or just want a really modern and clean look (maybe you like a nice stark style), then skipping the skirt and going with a tree collar like this is a great idea.” This one is handwoven from natural fibers and comes in two different sizes and colors.
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 14.
“Tie-dye is all the rage this season,” says Hallmark set decorator Selina van den Brink, who “loves” this one-of-a-kind handmade tree skirt. She says that Etsy is her go-to when dressing holiday sets, particularly because vendors are “very quick to respond to direct messages if you need to request expedited shipping or want to request something custom,” adding that she uses Etsy “all the time for my movies and TV shows.” For something a little more traditionally festive, we found a similar shibori-style one in red.
If ordered today with expedited shipping, it should arrive by December 25, though we recommend reaching out to the Etsy seller to confirm.
We think this marbled tie-dyed skirt from CB2 would look particularly handsome underneath some silver Christmas ornaments.
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 22.
An elevated take on a classic, Skidmore loves this textured style because it’s “classy and clean but still homey.” The quilting “adds some texture and interest to the eye,” she says, “but it’s not too stark or too traditional (or old-looking).” For a more personal touch, the skirt can also be monogrammed for a small fee.
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 14.
“This is the one I got for myself this year, as I’m obsessed with anything that feels Nordic/Icelandic/Dutch,” says van den Brink of this “heirloom-quality” woolen tree skirt. “I could use it for years to come with proper care.”
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 16.
This 34-inch reversible linen tree skirt is nice for smaller setups as well as those who aren’t big on reds and greens.
If ordered today with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 16.
“Arcadia Home is my new favorite company,” says van den Brink. The brand has a “similar feel to Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn,” she says, but their decorations are designed in Brooklyn and handmade in India and Peru. According to her (and the brand’s website), Arcadia Home was even commissioned to design tree skirts for the Obama family’s first Christmas in the White House private residence. She likes this one, which is made with sustainable wool and hand-felted flowers.
If ordered today from Arcadia Home with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 16. If ordered from Food52, it should arrive by December 14.
But the actual tree skirt designed for the Obama family’s White House, we think, would not be a bad choice either.
If ordered today from Maisonette with standard shipping, it should arrive by December 18. If ordered from Arcadia Home, it should arrive by December 16.
