Practicing Faith: There's no dress code for serving the Lord - The Westerly Sun

talu.indah.link

I wasn’t offended at all. I brought a colleague to the Rotary Club meeting. When I introduced him to one of the Rotartians at my table, he declared, “Now he looks like a minister!” Another person sitting across from me raised his eyebrows at the comment, and looked my way, waiting for my response. One could easily infer from the comment that the person was saying to me “You don’t look like a minister ... but he certainly does.” I wasn’t offended.

You see, I knew what he was trying to say. I responded, “You’re absolutely right. He does look like a minister.” My friend looked very proper in his sport coat and tie. He had offered the blessing and had a great sense of dignity about him. The remark was meant to be a compliment for my friend. Besides, I know who I am. This was several years ago but nothing has changed. Part of my success as a pastor has come from the fact that sometimes I don’t look like your proverbial minister.

Most people in the community know me as “Cal.” To them I am just one of the guys. I learned several years ago that I can’t show up in the marketplace wearing my “clergy clothes” and expect anyone to listen to me. If I am going to be effective in sharing the gospel, I have to live the Gospel. I have to reflect Christ in the way I live. I have to wear the qualities of integrity, compassion, faithfulness, and grace. No suit and tie will hide it if I don’t.

The truth is that Jesus called all of us to serve as his ministers. We should do our best to make a good impression but the clothing we wear isn’t as important as the message we share. The apostle Paul puts it this way in 2 Corinthians 5:20. “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” That means that we’ve been sent out into the world with a message of forgiveness, grace and new life. Each of us has our own unique assignment. We’ve been sent to people and places where we can make the best appeal.

God knows us. Our appearance matters but not as much as our authenticity. We need to be who we are. That means my enthusiasm for the lowly Detroit Tigers or your love for the New England Patriots can be a starting point for building a relationship with someone who needs to hear the gospel message. That means my love of music and drama or your love of computer technology puts us in a place where we can connect with others to share God’s love for them.

The best ministers are those who go into the world incognito, dressed as the common man or woman. The best ministers are those who can become a friend first, and then an evangelist. Isn’t that what Jesus did? He made friends with the disciples. He befriended the woman at the well, Nicodemus, Jairus and all the others he met along the way. Then he ministered to them.

It’s not the degree behind our name that affirms our calling. That farmer dressed in overalls, or the secretary sitting at a computer, or the accountant with a pocket filled with sharpened pencils, or the engineer on the commuter train, or even the 12-year-old little girl can claim the job of sharing the gospel with a world in need. The truth is that you may be the only minister some people ever meet. So don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t look like a minister. Believe me, looks aren’t everything.

It’s God who writes the job description. Mine fits me to a tee. I think if you look a little closer, you’ll see that God has one for you too. You’ll see that it describes you exactly the way you are. You are perfect for reaching out to the people you meet every day. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get out there and do what we ministers do. Let’s go serve the Lord!

The Rev. Cal Lord is pastor of Central Baptist Church in Westerly.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, everyone has found their everyday lives impacted, and that goes for celebrities, too. With many places remaining in lockdown, Angelina Jolie has only been spotted on a handful of occasions in recent months, such as when she's picking up food or shopping for essentials with her children.

This week, the Oscar-winning actress was photographed on a shopping trip with her daughter, Zahara. For the occasion, Jolie looked chic in a long white dress, which she paired with Fendi's embossed FF motif slip-on sandals, Christian Dior's calfskin Bobby bag, and a camel trench coat. The actress carried multiple shopping bags and wore a gray face mask for the duration of the outing.

In June 2020, Jolie gave an interview to Vogue India, in which she discussed co-parenting with her ex, Brad Pitt, following a public breakup. She explained, "I separated for the wellbeing of my family. It was the right decision. I continue to focus on their healing."

"Some have taken advantage of my silence," Jolie continued, "and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds. In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people."

Meanwhile, while promoting her Disney+ movie, The One and Only Ivan, Jolie opened up to Extra about parenting her six children during the pandemic. "They're all together and it's a nice big bunch, so everybody's helping each other out. We're lucky," she revealed.

Bride says sister-in-law has to wear baggy dress to wedding or she can't come - Fox News

talu.indah.link

Brides really don’t like being upstaged.

Everyone always says that they’re going to lose weight before a wedding. One woman actually did, which is great except for the fact that she’s not the bride-to-be. Even worse, the bride-to-be is apparently upset because she’s worried about not being the focus of attention at her own wedding.

According to a story on Reddit, a woman who lost about 20 pounds over the past year due to the pandemic is no longer welcome at her sister-in-law's wedding.

According to a story on Reddit, a woman who lost about 20 pounds over the past year due to the pandemic is no longer welcome at her sister-in-law's wedding.  (iStock)

In a post on Reddit’s forums, a user with the name ThrowRAWeddings shared their story. According to her, she lost about 20 pounds over the past year due to the pandemic. She explained that she had more time to exercise and focus on making healthy meals.

Her brother’s sister is getting married later this year and is only having a small group of people at the ceremony. The family recently got together to make plans for the wedding and apparently, things did not go well.

WOMAN DEMANDS FAMILY PAY FOR SECOND WEDDING BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T LIKE PHOTOS FROM FIRST

According to the story, "We met up yesterday at our house to talk about wedding plans with her brother and when (the bride-to-be) saw me she got mad at me and accused me of trying to upstage her at her own wedding because I am in shape now and I feel good and confident."

The story continues, "She said that (I) knew she was getting married and I’ve had my whole life to get fit but I purposely chose right before her wedding to do it. My husband defended me in front of her but after she left he told me that I should have apologized to her because she is very insecure and since her fiancé and best friend and fiancé’s parents haven’t seen me since I lost weight they will notice and it might feel like I was purposely trying to upstage her."

The author concludes the story by saying that she was told she either can’t come to the wedding or she has to "wear something really baggy" so that everyone else there won’t notice her weight loss.

She writes, "I don’t feel like I did anything on purpose to ruin the wedding but the fact my husband who has been nothing but supportive is taking her side is making me feel insane!"

Reddit users basically took her side, with one user writing, "Everyone has insecurities, and it's tough but you can't demand other people adjust their life just to suit your insecurities. The world doesn't revolve around your sister-in-law and I think it's best you don’t go to the wedding other than going there in a baggy dress and reaffirming to your sister-in-law that if she throws a tantrum she gets whatever she wants."

Another user added, "This is just crazy! I would be so happy for anyone that got focused on getting healthier and looking/feeling their best. Good on you for doing so well! Your husband is enabling sister-in-law’s bad behavior, there’s no reason for it."

"You're struggling to wrap your head around it because it's ridiculous and your husband needs to get his act together," added another, "and back you up here rather than his sister's absurd demands."

Davina McCall was cruelly body-shamed by a troll after she wore a strappy slip dress on The Masked Singer last weekend.

For yesterday’s show, the TV star, 53, wore a sheer black dress and black heels that showed off her toned legs.

In a post of her stunning outfit shared to her 1.2 million followers on Instagram, the mother-of-three revealed that her frock was by fashion designer Amanda Wakeley.

Captioning the image, she wrote: “Working it with the ‘one hand on waist’ pose. Thank you @amandawakeley for once again making me feel sassy again!”

McCall – who is a judge on the ITV programme – added that she “loved the big pants” that completed her daring look.

The snap went down well with her fans, who left more than 115,000 ‘likes’ and over 4,000 messages of praise.

Writer Bella Mackie joked: “You actually might be the only person dressing up in the UK on a Saturday night right now and I am so jealous.”

Fellow TV star Carol Vorderman wrote: “Stunning.”

It came as McCall had the perfect response for a Twitter user who described her as being an “old, over sun-kissed woman” who “should cover up”.

The star shared an image to the site of her wearing a silky, polka dot gown, with spaghetti straps and a side split, for her appearance on last weekend’s show.

She received a whole slew of compliments on the sleek look, but one person wasn’t quite as impressed.

They unkindly commented: “Old over sun-kissed woman should cover up… stunning dress but not for the wrinkly crinkly… demure for the mature.”

However, the presenter impressively shot back with: “Really sorry. Absolutely no chance of demure over here Sue... growing old disgracefully is far more fun.”

Sofia Richie Flaunts Taut Tummy In Bikini Top And Long Skirt - The Inquisitr

talu.indah.link

Sofia Richie took to Instagram on Saturday, January 30, to share a post that delighted her 6.5 million followers. The smoking-hut update showed the American model and fashion designer wearing a skimpy bikini top and matching skirt that showcased her fantastic figure.

Sofia posed outdoors in her sexy outfit. In the photo, she stood against a white wall, basking under the bright sunshine. She posed by leaning on the wall and placed her hands behind her waist. The social media personality popped her left hip to the side and placed her right leg forward with her knee bent. She raised her chin, tilted her head, and closed her eyes as if feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin.

It is also important to note that her flawless complexion appeared glowing in the shot. She was surrounded by trees and small plants, as seen in the shadows behind her.

Sofia flaunted her killer body in a brown bikini top that featured tiny triangle cups that were cut so small that they hardly held her breasts. A closer look at the piece was seen in another Instagram post. The swimwear was made of thick, soft cotton material. However, the cups were fully lined and secured her buxom curves. The plunging neckline displayed a nice look at her cleavage. The garment had thin straps that clung to her neck, highlighting her shoulders and slim arms.

She also sported a matching long skirt made of the same fabric. The waistline sat just below her navel, and it hugged her small torso, and it helped accentuate her taut stomach. Several viewers even gushed over her abs. The clothing was formfitting, and it emphasized her hourglass shape.

Sofia parted her highlighted blond hair in the center and styled in sleek, straight strands. The influencer opted to wear several accessories with her sexy outfit, including four necklaces and a couple of bracelets — that were mostly seen in the other social media share.

Sofia paired the saucy snap with a short caption wherein she mentioned her thoughts of the warm season. She gave credit to the professional photographer by tagging his page in the picture.

The latest share has been liked 151,000-plus times and received more than 310 comments in less than a day. Many of her eager online supporters and several internet personalities went to the comments section and wrote compliments about her enviable body. Several other admirers praised her beauty. Some others were unable to form words with their thoughts about the pic and instead chimed in with a mix of emoji.

“Fabulous shot of a very beautiful lady,” gushed an admirer.

“So gorgeous!!” added another fan.

talu.indah.link

Rebel Wilson dressed up to celebrate her new role as the host of ABC’s “Pooch Perfect” and yesterday shared her ultra-chic statement outfit balanced with timelessly elegant shoes.

The actress wore the Prada Feather-Trimmed Dress from the Italian luxury labels Spring ’19 collection. It features a body-conscious silhouette with three-quarter length sleeves with a matching colored belt at the waist. For a dramatic element, the dress is complete with an eye-catching pink feather trim detail on one side of the skirt and finishes below the hemline. While the dress is currently sold-out, it previously retailed for $1,248 on farfetch.com.

For footwear, Wilson completed the party-ready outfit with a pointed toe pair of shoes from Louise et Cie. The brand’s Alyah Washable Square-Toe Flats in the black colorway offer a similar aesthetic and also features a sleek, minimalist silhouette. These flats retail for $89 and are available for purchase on vincecamuto.com.

When styling more casual ensembles, the “Pitch Perfect” star often selects a pair of loafers, from brands, such as Nicholas Kirkwood, or a pair of Nike sneakers. Additionally, for cold weather activities, Wilson appears to also have embraced the ’80s-inspired Moon boots trend.

Blake Lively says fashion designers couldn't dress her after she gave birth: 'It doesn’t send a great message to women' - Yahoo Sports

Blake Lively had a hell of a time fitting into clothes after giving birth to her third child, so she’s asking designers to do better.

On Friday, the Gossip Girl alum, who in Oct. 2019 gave birth to her third child with husband Ryan Reynolds, shared several photos on her Instagram Stories, recapping some treasured looks. After praising celebrity jeweler Lorraine Schwartz and a blue MaxMara coat she dubbed “Sexy Grover fashion,” Lively showed a Lanvin shirt-and-dress combo worn for an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “because no one had samples that fit me after giving birth. And so many clothes from stores didn’t fit either. So. Many.”

The 33-year-old wrote, “It doesn’t send a great message to women when their bodies don’t fit into what brands have to offer. It’s alienating and confusing. And I wish I felt as confident [then], as I do now, a year later looking back. That body gave me a baby. And was producing that baby’s entire food supply. What a beautiful miracle. But instead of feeling proud, I felt insecure. Simply because I didn’t fit into clothes. How silly is that in retrospect.”

She also tagged body-positive entrepreneur Katie Sturino for her work. “She reminds me, we can all ask for better from the brands we love.”

Lively and Reynolds, who have been married since 2012, have three daughters: James, 6, Inez, 4 and Betty, 1. The actress has embraced her post-motherhood body with a healthy diet and exercise. “Turns out you can’t lose the 61 lbs you gained during pregnancy by just scrolling through Instagram and wondering why you don’t look like all the bikini models,” she wrote under a 2018 Instagram photo of herself and fitness trainer Don Saladino. “...10 months to gain, 14 months to lose. Feeling very proud.”

And in 2016, after filming the horror movie The Shallows (for which she had two months to get bikini ready after the birth of James), she pointed out the burden on new moms. “I focused on training and eating well. It took two different trainers and a nutritionist to help me get into that sort of shape because it’s not normal to look like that eight months after having a kid,” Lively told the U.K.’s The Sun.

“Women put pressure on themselves to look like a Victoria’s Secret model after having a baby,” she added. “It’s absolutely absurd. It was my job to look that way.”

Sofia Richie’s Bikini Top & Fuzzy Velour Skirt Bring Back Early 2000s Vibes - Footwear News

Sofia Richie tapped into the growing revitalization of late 1990s and early 2000s trends for her outfit of the day.

Channeling her older sister and 2000s style icon Nicole Richie, the model took to Instagram this morning in a forgotten style trend from the era, matching a brown bikini top to a mid-rise brown velour skirt. Replacing a shirt with a bralette or bikini top was a classic move from decades ago, favorited by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera amongst other stars.

Velour, too, is experiencing a moment on the fashion scene amidst revitalizations of early 2000s trends. Kim Kardashian exemplified this with a full Skims collection made from the material, even tapping one of the decade’s biggest names, Paris Hilton, to model the line in October 2020. Sofia Richie herself modeled velour as well for a nostalgic Juicy Couture x Kappa campaign in September of last year.

In another look shared to social media yesterday, Richie herself opted for more throwback trends as she posed in her scenic backyard in a look courtesy of Pretty Little Thing. The 22-year-old, who serves as an ambassador for the label, paired tie-waist camel cargo pants with a button-up cardigan.

Watch on FN

Though she went barefoot for both snaps, when it comes to footwear, Richie often taps to DSW for her more wallet-friendly picks. The brand ambassador first collaborated with DSW in May 2020 when she, as well as Reebok and Vince Camuto, came together to use footwear for good. She announced that DSW and the two brands would be donating more than 100,000 new shoes to frontline workers. Since then, the media personality has continued to share a selection of her favorite styles from the retailer across social media, matching the pairs to everything from workout apparel to chic summer dresses.

In addition to joining hands and feet with DSW, Richie previously has created her own capsules with brands like Frankie’s Bikinis and Misguided as well as starred in campaigns for Mackage, Tommy Hilfiger, Rolla’s Jeans and more. The media personality‘s own rotation of relaxed footwear includes everything from Fendi slides to APL sneakers and fuzzy Ugg slippers.

Hailey Baldwin Reimagines Athleisure in a Printed Skirt, Bralette & Tailored Jacket for Adidas x Ivy Park - Footwear News

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, we may receive an affiliate commission.

Hailey Baldwin served up a new version of what we consider athleisure for Beyoncé’s upcoming Adidas x Ivy Park collection.

The 24-year-old model posed for the two athletic powerhouses on Instagram yesterday, donning a printed combination look from the upcoming “Icy Park” collection. The ensemble teamed a coordinating bralette, cargo-style skirt, tailored and pocketed jacket and an on-trend bucket hat, all coated in a brown and clay orange repeating pattern.

Earlier in the week, the singer’s brand tapped Baldwin to model another look from her third collaborative collection with Adidas that was first introduced on Sunday. In an image shared to Ivy Park‘s Instagram, Baldwin could be seen posed atop a decked-out car in a coordinating pink athleisure set.

The outfit included a long-sleeve fitted crop top teamed with printed biker shorts and a hot pink beanie. As for footwear, she laced up the collection’s new platform take on a Three Stripes sneaker; the silhouette includes a lifted flatform base with smooth leather uppers and contrasting suede overlays.

Watch on FN

Titled the “Icy Park” collection, the third iteration of the collab combines streetwear aesthetics with wintery appeal through a mix of apparel, footwear and accessories; the pieces feature alpine-inspired detailing with classic references to street style trends that are popping off at the moment. Though the official release information has yet to be unveiled, the size-inclusive collection aims to inspire “creativity, individuality and imagination” in its wearers, according to the partners.

As for Baldwin herself, the model’s experience in the fashion industry extends to all sides. The media personality worked with Levi’s to star in their summer ’20 campaign alongside Jaden Smith and most recently joined the denim brand to help launch its SecondHand upcycling initiative. She has also appeared in marketing campaigns for brands such as Guess, Zadig & Voltaire, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. What’s more, in 2016, the A-lister joined forces with Ugg, starring in the label’s Classic Street Collection campaign for fall ’16.

The daughter of Stephen Baldwin‘s shoe closet also includes an eclectic mix beyond her ambassadorships. On top of her go-to Nike Air Force 1 sneakers, she has been spotted wearing sneakers from Chanel, Off-White and Nike x Fear of God collabs, as well as heels from Tabitha Simmons and Jimmy Choo. The media personality’s new go-to brand for shoes is Bottega Veneta, falling in line with trending celeb-favorite styles from the label that every “it” girl is wearing.

Nicky Gile Stuns In A Sexy Crop Top & Matching Skirt - The Inquisitr

talu.indah.link

Nicky Gile gave fans a nice view of her insanely toned body in her latest Instagram post. The gorgeous American model took to the popular social media platform to showcase her incredibly fit physique in a sexy new matching set from a brand called Adika Style.

Nicky rocked a two-piece set that included a tie-dye cropped top and mini skirt. The top had a snug fit that hugged her buxom curves, as well as a scoop neckline that showed a glimpse of her cleavage. The thin straps clung to her shoulders, highlighting her slim arms. The length showcased her flat tummy.

The bottoms seemed to fit her perfectly. The garment had a narrow waistband that clung to her slim midsection, obscuring her belly button from view. The fit emphasized her hips, and the color complimented her flawless skin. The hottie also sported a jacket that came from the same line. For the shots, the outerwear was unzipped and halfway taken off her left shoulder.

Nicky was seen on the balcony of a building, dressed in her sexy outfit. In the first photo, the babe sat with her thighs closed on an elevated platform near the glass railings. She tugged at her skirt with her left hand as she looked straight onto the camera, smiling.

In the second pic, Nicky slightly changed her stance by leaning sideways. The influencer grabbed the hem of her bottom as she tilted her head to the side, gazing at the lens. In the last snapshot, her stance did not change, but she glanced to the side at something that probably struck her interest.

The blue sea, trees, and various plants were visible in the background.
Nicky wore several accessories, wearing three necklaces, a pair of small hoop earrings, and rings. Her nails were short and painted in a french tip style, but instead of white polish, she used black.

Nicky wrote a short caption, something irrelevant to her poses and attire. She gave credit to Adika Style by tagging the brand in the caption and picture.

As per usual, the new upload earned a lot of praise from her supporters. Many of them dove into the comments section to shower her with compliments. Most of them told her she looked gorgeous. Some others praised her fantastic figure. The post accrued more than 15,900 likes and over 430 comments within hours of being posted.

“THE PERFECT GIRL,” gushed one of her fans, adding five heart-eyes emoji at the end of the comment.

“Classy and beautiful! I think I am in love with you,” wrote another admirer.

“Nothing makes me happier than getting a new post notification from you,” added a third follower.

Make mini skirts a part of your winter wardrobe by pairing them with thigh-high boots, just like these stars! Bella Thorne, Olivia Culpo and more have rocked the trend.

Mini skirts and thigh high boots are one hot combination, and so many celebrities we love are showing us how to rock it just right! The look is perfect for a night out, and we’ve seen stars wear it as part of their street style and even on the red carpet once in a while. It may be the middle of winter, but thigh-high boots make it possible to still wear dresses, skirts and shorts comfortably.

Olivia Culpo is one of our all-time favorite style icons, and she definitely slayed the skirt and boot trend during a Sept. 2018 outing in New York City. She rocked a high-waisted, grey skirt, which buttoned front and center. It was paired with a silky blue tank top, and Olivia wore electric blue, high boots to match. Albion College Student Creates High Heel Stabilizing Device for Those with Arthritis — Detroit Jewish News - The Jewish News

Leia Serlin and her high heel stabilizer

(Leia Serlin)

Leia Serlin hopes to continue making the devices for people who both want and need them, even while applying for dental school.

Leia Serlin was having trouble shopping for high heels to wear to her cousin’s wedding. Serlin, who suffers from an arthritis-based auto-immune disorder, was specifically struggling to find something fashion-forward that would also stabilize her foot and allow her to walk comfortably. “It didn’t exist on the market,” Serlin said.

Serlin, an Albion College senior majoring in biology and planning to go into dentistry, was in the midst of writing her honor’s thesis comparing dentistry and art.

It was then that Serlin came up with an idea: What if there were a device any person could put on their shoe that could stabilize it, arthritis issues or not?

Over the past four months, Serlin has brought that idea to fruition — designing, building and testing a high heel stabilizing device for her reimagined honor’s thesis.

“It really did come out of absolutely nowhere,” Serlin said. “I was doing my other thesis for a couple months before I came up with this, and I was like ‘could I potentially do this as my thesis?’ and my adviser said, ‘Yeah, why not?’”

The goal of Serlin’s thesis is to note if there is increased stability in arthritis and non-arthritis subjects when walking with the device support as compared to those without the support.

Serlin has seen a lot of adversity over the course of the thesis, but it hasn’t deterred her.

She has never created anything like the device before. She has a background in art, specifically sculpture, metalwork and needlepoint, and some background in sewing, but didn’t have much experience using an actual sewing machine.

After weeks spent researching joint stability issues and treatments, Serlin had a plan of picking things apart to resew them to create the device. Many of her materials came from dissecting ankle wraps, ankle braces and brassieres. Then she added stabilization components. Afterward, lace and rhinestones were added for the fashion-forward element.

“There was a lot of research that went into the design,” Serlin said. “Once I had the design done, then I had to actually sew it and make it happen. I ended up making two sizes, using bra extenders for the attachment to expand the ankle as needed.”

Finding a sewing machine was even difficult for Serlin, with everybody buying them to make masks in the midst of the pandemic.

Testing Her Invention

Serlin, though, describes finding test subjects as the toughest part of the project.

“COVID made it really difficult to recruit participants,” she said. “That’s hard anyways, getting people to come to a location to walk around in high heels for 20 minutes, but then you throw in the pandemic. Especially because I’m looking for people with arthritis and that’s a common high-risk category.”

Serlin recruited hard on Facebook, Instagram and even had her mother help make calls. By the end of the recruitment process, Serlin was amazed at how many people ended up volunteering: 31 test subjects.

At one point, Serlin had a flare-up of her auto-immune disease and had to get her IV infusion done in the middle of the testing process. At some points, Serlin was trying to help people put on the devices while wearing a mask, gloves and the IV connection on the back of her hand, but her determination to help herself and, in turn, help others, encouraged her to persist.

The test subjects did a series of walking tests for the device with Serlin measuring the angles of their knees and ankles to see if there was a positive shift in the way they walked.

“Basically, for every person, they shifted 10-20 degrees toward 180 degrees, which was a great thing,” Serlin said. “You can see there is clearly an increase in stability with the attachment for both people with and without arthritis.”

Serlin crafted three different prototypes of the device, settling on the one with a strapping system as the most effective.

“It was the most supportive,” she said. “I tried it on, everybody in my household tried it on, even my dad. I had to test all different sized ankles.”

Serlin has received lots of positive feedback on the device, with some of the testers without arthritis saying they liked the additional stability, and people who have arthritis saying it helped them with their ailment.

Helping Others

Serlin is in the process of finishing her thesis right now, currently having written 22 pages. Once that’s done, she hopes to possibly continue making the devices for people who both want and need them, even while applying for dental school.

“I’ve had a lot of people reaching out asking if they can buy them,” Serlin said. “I’m looking into different avenues for maybe starting a potential business, but it’s not clear yet what I’ll end up doing.”

Her goal is to help people, said Serlin, who spent more than two weeks volunteering at Israel’s Save a Child’s Heart children’s home in 2019.

“That’s all I want to do with my life. I’m going into dentistry; it’s to help people smile. But, for this, it’s a whole other ballgame I never thought I’d be in. As somebody who has these problems, I never expected to be the one helping people walk better.”

Molly: The expectations I put on myself nearly ruined my dress-shopping experience - Omaha World-Herald

Cheers to besties!

Bride blogger Molly Mahannah offers a toast to her bestie, Jordan, on her wedding day. It's great, she says, to have a squad who's strong and supportive.

I have a confession. I wasn’t excited to go wedding dress shopping.

From the moment Stephen and I got engaged inquiring minds wanted to know: Have I thought about my dress? What styles do I like? When was I going shopping? Every question filled me with an overwhelming sense of dread.

It’s not like I hadn’t imagined my “Say Yes to the Dress” moment at least one thousand times. I had. I just had convinced myself I wasn’t going to get it.

And here’s why: The wedding industry puts unnecessary pressure on brides. There. I said it. Phew! A weight has been lifted.

In all sincerity, the expectations of a bride on her wedding day are immense. Some of it is justified. After all, it is the biggest event of your life and you want to look and feel your best.

I felt this insane pressure to be in the best shape of my life. In the month leading up to my dress-shopping experience, I told myself I was going to diet hardcore. I even purchased a prepackaged meal kit online to help me stick to my new diet.

I was convinced I was “sweating for the wedding” in order to make my dress-shopping experience a happy and fulfilling one. I told myself that because I am not a sample size, and I was sure the dresses in stock wouldn’t look good on me and I wouldn’t be able to find anything that made me feel beautiful.

I had totally convinced myself that if I didn’t look a certain way, I wasn’t going to find a dress -- despite knowing there were at least three amazing local stores with styles that suited my personal taste.

This is “toxic wedding culture” to the extreme. It’s the same little voice in my head that is telling me I need false eyelashes and a spray tan before I take engagement pictures next month despite having naturally long lashes and my fiancé’s insistence that my alabaster skin tone is pretty.

But then something happened. Well, Christmas happened. I know I’ve said that Halloween is my favorite holiday. I mean, we’re getting married the day before, but I love Christmas just as much. Between all the goodies our staff was getting during the week to help keep morale high at the school and the hundreds of Christmas cookies my mom made for our family, I simply couldn’t diet.

The night before my dress-shopping appointment, my best friend Jordan texted, asking if I was excited. I told her no. I told her I felt like an alien because everyone expected me to be excited but I was nervous, and worried that the trip would turn into a disaster and end with me in a spiral of self-loathing.

I know I’ve mentioned how amazing my friends are, but truly, my bridesmaids are the most supportive and  strong women. Ugh. I could gush about them all day.

Molly Mahannah, bride blogger

Wedding Essentials bride blogger Molly Mahannah is planning an October 2021 wedding.

Jordan assured me that I was not an alien -- at least not for the reason I shared. “That’s how I felt," she told me. "We’re our harshest critics. Our bodies are amazing no matter where they’re at. Just enjoy! You have no stress to buy anything tomorrow. And if you do, well, amazing!”

It definitely helped ease my anxiety and the next morning I woke up giddy. My first (and spoiler alert: only stop) was ARC Bridal. From the minute I entered the store, they made me feel like a rock star, and to my surprise I looked great in almost everything I tried on — even a mermaid gown that showed off a lot more of my body than I was comfortable with.

The stylist (whose name has escaped me and for that I am truly sorry) picked up on my style right away and pulled an amazing gown for my second try-on.

Dress after dress, I kept thinking about that second gown. Finally, we tried it again -- this time with some embellishments and a veil. At some point I said, “I don’t want to take it off.” Then she said, “Molly, are you saying yes to the dress?” Before I could even utter the word yes, I burst into tears. I felt like a bride!

The gals brought out champagne and even gifted me an adorable accessory. (I’m being purposefully vague in my descriptions in case nosy fiancés are reading, hoping for the inside scoop.)

Yes to the dress

Behind that mask is a mighty happy Molly Mahannah. She said yes to the dress at Arc Bridal, her first stop in what she feared would be a difficult search.

I cannot recommend the staff at ARC Bridal enough. They were professional, safe, kind, fun and never once made me feel insecure. More than that: they were my biggest fans, hyping up the experience. If I could shop there every time I needed an outfit, I would.

All of this to say, yes, you should absolutely want to feel beautiful on your wedding day. But you shouldn’t need to feel MORE than what you already are. Although, I still might get that spray tan.
