On January 20, 2021, President Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States. And while the festivities were certainly different than normal thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, they did mark the beginning of a new era, of which includes the return of fashion diplomacy to DC. From Jill Biden in ornate and textured blue Markarian, to Vice President Kamala Harris in vibrant symbolic purple by Christopher John Rogers, to Ella Emhoff in sparkling Miu Miu and Meena Harris in a green shearling Coach topper, it was certainly a day for statement overcoats. Emhoff and Harris, however, didn't just get the memo when it came to picking a jacket that would turn heads—they also struck the same note with the outfits that they donned underneath their fashion-forward cold weather gear.
Namely: the both went with a #VeryTandC classic, the prairie dress. In an Instagram post, womenswear designer Batsheva revealed that the second daughter donned a burgundy silk moiré dress from her collection to celebrate her step-mother's inauguration. Also pictured, is Harris's niece, who also chose a bright turquoise ruffled skirt and coordinating blouse with the same distinct detailing (ruffled cuffs, puff sleeves) by Ulla Johnson. Clearly, the modest and feminine styling was the direction of the moment. Meena even doubled down with another prairie dress for her inaugural celebrations, wearing sparkling Vampire's Wife (a look that has been worn by Kate Middleton and Princess Beatrice, too!).
