FORT HOOD, Texas (KWTX) - The U.S. Army announced a number of changes to its grooming and dress code Tuesday.
Some of the major changes include the right for women to wear earrings, have longer pony tails, new uniforms to accommodate for breast feeding and the right to wear certain colors of nail polish as long as they are professional.
Army top brass says their goal is to push unity in the army while also embracing individuality in every soldier.
“People say why now and I say why not?,” said Army SGM Michael Grinston.
“So, when you ask that we need to change, use the appropriate channels. We’ve been going through all the regulations to make sure that they’re equitable for all soldiers so we get the best talent in the Army. There’s more coming, and we’re just getting started making all the changes to make the Army better for you.”
It’s a goal recruiters like SFC Kara Wilson say will boost their numbers.
“I think the best way to predict the future is to brigade and engage it,” she said.
“That’s exactly what the Army is doing especially with these changes. I’m very excited about it.”
According to Steven Draper, director of Fort Hood museums, the move could be an effort to boost morale and recruitment numbers.
“They were trying to provide this idea of inclusion into the Army,” he said.
“With all the these we’ve gone through in the last few years, it’s important that we take care of our soldiers and this is one of those guides.”
While many soldiers hoped that beards would now be allowed, unfortunately they’re still a no-go unless they’re needed for medical purposes.
The dress code will go into effect next month.
