new day, a new diary and have we got shoes for you as fashion designer Jimmy Choo makes the firm prediction that high-heeled shoes for men are the trend of tomorrow. Meanwhile, Clara Amfo talks cosy couture and glamour in the post-Strictly life. Then, we hear about Ricky Gervais and his encounter with Hampstead Heath’s social-distancing enforcer…
JIMMY CHOO predicts that once the world returns to normal, people won’t ditch their high heels with a newfound taste for a comfier life — instead he expects to see a rise in the number of men wearing big heels. The fashion designer said he has already had some female friends “who requested a pair of high-heeled shoes for their partner. It’s not something new. Traditionally, men from upper society in Europe do wear high-heeled shoes. Thus, for today and in future, men that wear high-heeled shoes are just paying tribute to tradition while looking fabulous. Once you started the trend, others will follow,” he explained. Choo, who though locked down in Malaysia, is in the process of setting up his own school, the JCA London Fashion Academy in Mayfair, added: “High-heeled shoes for men are unlike stilettos. The heel shape are adapted from the basic Cuban heel into a special shape that will bring out the best in the masculinity of the man wearing it.” Better enjoy those slippers while you can.
Mays lights up in the line of duty...
DANIEL MAYS, the Line of Duty star who has just finished shooting the second series of Temple, recalls sparks flying on the set of ITV crime drama Des. “I got an engraved Zippo lighter from the camera department,” he tells us, a reference to his unofficial award for most cigarettes smoked onscreen. “I miss [the crew], but I certainly don’t miss all those herbal cigarettes. My character was a 60-a-day man so I had no choice”.
Strictly shimmer and socks for Amfo
CLARA AMFO isn’t letting lockdown get in the way of a little glamour. “I spent Friday and Saturday night in it in my socks at home,” the radio presenter says. But what is “it”? Her gold dress from the title sequence of Strictly, of course. The head of wardrobe at Strictly sent it to her and Amfo is in love. She tells the Radio Times: “I’d do anything to get back into those costumes again.” Keeping up appearances.
‘A fail’s only safe for the well-off ’
TOM ALLEN isn’t a fan of being encouraged to fail. The Bake Off Extra Slice presenter says at youth theatre workshops “people would go, ‘You should learn to fail, it’s important to fail’”. He counters on the Fortunately podcast: “That’s a very privileged mistake to have, I think. Everything in most normal people’s lives is like, ‘Don’t fail, we cannot afford for you to fail, you need to be able to support yourself. If it all goes wrong, it goes really wrong here so don’t fail’.” And as for why he’d taken the risk himself, Allen joked: “I wanted to be an actor, it turned out I was just gay.”
Gervais’s social distance lessons
AS Ricky Gervais has discovered, Hampstead Heath has a new social distancing enforcer. “I was appalled while doing my morning walk... to see the paths crowded”, writes nonagenarian Heath enthusiast Angela Humphery in a letter to the Ham & High. “Many girls were walking three abreast less than a foot away.” She adds: “When I held out my walking pole to show the two metres they should keep between us, I was verbally abused.” Humphery shared a jovial photo of her showing “local comedian and Heath walker” Gervais how to keep a safe distance. It’s stick not carrot round here.
SW1A
ZARAH SULTANA predicts, after enjoying TikTok’s Bernie Sanders filters, that more colleagues will be signing up to engage younger constituents. The Labour MP tells us: “Most MPs have Twitter and Facebook... I reckon TikTok will be seen as a platform that is just as important.” MPs had better brush up on their dance moves.
Thérèse Coffey has been out on broadcast rounds this morning, a day after the ConservativeHome website called for her to appear on air more. In the same piece, Paul Goodman predicts “a shake-up at the top” of the Conservatives and a reshuffle of Amanda Milling, the party chairwoman. Are Milling’s days numbered?
