On January 15, Selena Gomez dropped her new single, "De Una Vez," marking the actor and musician's first song to be recorded entirely in Spanish in over 10 years. Its accompanying video, directed by the husband and wife team Los Pérez (Tania Verduzco and Adrián Pérez) is a gorgeous dream, heavily influenced by magic realism and inspired by famous Latin artists like Gabriel García Márquez and the one and only Frida Kahlo.
As reported by Vogue, the pink gown Selena wears throughout the video was designed by Rodarte, taking Frida Kahlo as the main inspiration. “We wanted to have these connections, to create this look, and to play with the amazing flowers the way Frida did, but making it modern and cool for right now,” Tania Verduzco told the magazine. “The flowers on the dress, hair, and within the video all connect with this idea of renewal.” As for Selena, she loved that both the dress and the video included elements of nature, which mirrored the personal tone of the song. “I love the role nature plays in the video as well and how it represents healing and growth,” she shared.
The pink floral dress is part of Rodarte's Spring/Summer 2021 collection and features a V-neck, puffed sleeves, and a romantic and feminine pink, white, and yellow daisy print with silk floral embellishments. The video's stylist Shirley Kurata paired the gown with feathered opal earrings from designer Daniela Villegas, and the glowing pink heart Selena wears at her chest is reminiscent of the Sacred Heart, a motif often present in Mexican and Hispanic traditional imagery, particularly religious. “We wanted to play with powerful language and images,” Verduzco explained. “We designed the heart — we call it the Milagro in Mexican culture — and its light to be a metaphor for the healing throughout the story.”
