This is the final Prom and Dress Sale and will be held at the Biesiot Activities Center from 10 am to 1pm February 27th. All proceeds will benefit the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, a United Way funded organization. They are only able to accept cash or check.
“Every dollar we raise goes to the shelter, and this project is entirely handled by volunteers,” said Rhonda Dukart, a committee member. “All these years we have had many girls that have thanked us and said how much they appreciate that they were able to get a beautiful dress and so it is a wonderful project but it has run its course.”
Last year October was the original date to have their final sale but it was cancelled to comply with COVID-19 restrictions.
“We were all set for it, had all the advertising done and then the (COVID-19) numbers were really peaking at that time,” Dukart said. “We decided to reschedule this year at this time. Number 1 reason is because Dickinson High has their prom at the end of March so we wanted to offer this opportunity one last time.”
All dresses will be ten dollars whether they are brand new or gently-worn. To make the event more safe for everyone's health, masks will be required, there will be no dressing rooms available and because this is their final sale event, they will not be able to accept returns or any further donated dresses.
“We are going to be as careful as we can,” Dukart said. “One of the reasons why we moved it to the Biesiot Activities Center is because we have way more space.”
It was a pain-staking decision to end the annual event after 15 years but memories made will still remain for those who help make a memorable night for girls and young women.
“I still tear up when I share this story. We had a mother come in with her two beautiful daughters. She had been a victim, but she was no longer in an abusive situation and she was getting back on her feet,” Dukart said. “She brought her two daughters to us to be able to get prom dresses and I can promise you that when those two girls left they looked like princesses. They were so happy and their mother was teary eyed with joy. We all looked at ourselves and knew no matter how much work it takes, this is why we do this.
Dukart said that there have been many others but that lady and her daughters really brought home the value of the project.
Dresses that are not sold by the end of the sale will be donated to a similar project run by business woman, Terri Bachmeier operating T-N-T Hair Design in Williston, ND.
Bachmeier is taking dresses until the end of February and is accepting drop offs between 10 am to 11 pm.
Dukart recommends that for the low price of ten dollars people should buy multiple dresses. And whatever doesn't fit or they dont love, they can then donate the dresses back to local charities like Able, ARC and House of Manna.
