Since my son was little, I tried to teach him manners — the desire through our actions to make another person's life a little more pleasant or bring a little more kindness. Will what I do make their day better or help them?
That is how I see Marlena's refusal to follow health department rules. This happened late last spring when Indiana opened up for food, gyms and hair dressers. There were a whole bunch of people who could not wait another minute to dye their hair or eat a burger outside their home. When my hair dresser opened a few weeks later, I was delighted to again look like a human being, and I followed it up with lunch at a favorite eatery.
I sympathize with Marlena's plight. I try to get takeout at a local Saugatuck restaurant where I live at least once a week. I go to the local coffee shop for takeout. And even then, there have been articles in The Sentinel about beloved restaurants closing. Because Marlena is an immigrant does not mean she has a special right to keep her restaurant open. Other immigrants are following the rules and suffering.
This is about courtesy and manners — not about cutting in line — about supporting our friends and neighbors. Marlena may keep her business open, but at a cost to the place down the road only doing takeout. Does she want to be a good citizen, neighbor and friend in our community? Do the people packing her restaurant each day want only her restaurant to survive? Does she care whether anyone who works for her or eats there gets sick?
My grandmother was an immigrant from the Ukraine. She never thought the rules didn't apply to her, even during the Depression. I ask Marlena to begin to care about her neighbors and fellow business owners.
