The Best Fashion to Wear When You Can Dress Up Again - The Wall Street Journal

Working from home has meant, in general, a few things: lunch from the fridge, lots of leggings and the end of high-octane fashion. But not for everyone: Some people this season have been lusting for a pair of crystal-embellished satin stilettos with towering, four-plus-inch heels, priced at $995. The pumps, from Georgian brand Mach & Mach, are bestsellers for fashion retailer Moda Operandi. Some are still available in black and pink—the oh-so-practical white iteration is already sold out on the site—and, adorned with an oversize bedazzled bow, hardly made for puttering around the kitchen. “It won’t stop selling, and it is glam,” says Lauren Santo Domingo, co-founder and chief brand officer of Moda Operandi.

These are not the only outré pieces flying out the door: According to Santo Domingo, Moda Operandi’s eveningwear sales in January this year were 98 percent higher than for December 2020. Pieces that have sold recently include a $6,900 feather-trimmed pink-silk kaftan-style dress from Valentino, a nearly sheer strappy black calf-length gown from Jacquemus ($680) and a frilly, floral one-shouldered cocktail dress from Giambattista Valli for $3,510.

When pandemic-induced lockdowns first set in, in spring 2020, “I was like f— it, I’m never wearing pants again,” says Sarah Hoover, a director at Gagosian gallery. “I did all my work in a bikini for a while.” By Christmas, however, Hoover was in a hot-pink Valentino ruffled minidress, worn with dainty black-bow pumps embellished with crystals—all to eat takeout Chinese food at home with her husband, artist Tom Sachs, and their toddler son.

She also has been wearing a red-and-white Rodarte tea dress printed with hearts and bearing a faux red rose on the oversize collar. “I never would have thought it would be something I would buy during Covid,” she says, but adds she was tempted by the joyous spirit of the piece and the idea of supporting the Rodarte designers, two sisters who work independently of a major fashion company. “Value took on a really different meaning for me,” says Hoover, who says she has also picked up a Chanel sweater with the brand’s logo in hot pink and a long black Prada skirt with a lip print, and has been scouring 1stDibs for vintage Yves Saint Laurent dresses. “If I am going to buy something that I can’t see myself wearing [right now], it better be an actual piece of art that I can’t see myself living my life without.”

Luxe stores like Bergdorf Goodman are seeing interest in high-fashion offerings. “On the flip side of casualization, we definitely have that customer who is not holding back,” says Yumi Shin, Bergdorf Goodman’s chief merchant. She says that embellished, one-of-a-kind coats from Los Angeles–based brand Libertine, which sell for $6,000 to $12,000, have been on the bestseller list weekly, and gowns for special occasions are still finding success, including a one-off Khaite dress created for the store. “Our customers have always gravitated towards special pieces,” she says. “You can enjoy it now in your home or your garden. And then after corona, you can continue to enjoy [these pieces] for many, many years.”
