Christi Riggs had planned to host an event last year in the days before Trigg County High School’s annual prom. But then COVID-19 began impacting everything in the community, including prom.
And with the 2020 prom canceled, so were Riggs’ inaugural plans to give away free prom dresses.
“Our dress give-away last year was supposed to be in March,” said Riggs of the simply be-YOU-tiful Prom Dress Giveaway that she and her husband Lyle Riggs organized for girls who want to go to the annual dance.
With the high school dance on again this year, so is the dress give-away.
Girls who are interested or in need of a dress for the prom are invited to sign up for one of the try-on sessions that begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Point Baptist Church, 187 Old Dover Road in Cadiz. Girls have half an hour to try on and select a dress, and may choose one dress only.
The prom dress give-away is open to girls at any school; Trigg County has slated its 2021 prom for April 30.
Riggs said the dresses, nearly 250 of them donated to the effort, come in all styles and sizes.
“There’s a little bit of everything,” said Riggs, noting that some of the dresses have been donated by girls who didn’t get to go to the prom themselves, and they still have the sales tags on them.
A substitute teacher now working at Trigg County Middle School, Riggs said the inspiration for a prom dress give-away in the local community came from North Carolina, where Riggs and her husband used to live and where they donated dresses to a similar program in that community.
Following their move to Trigg County, they discovered there was no effort in the local community to give away free dresses to prom-goers, although Riggs said there are others elsewhere in Kentucky.
“We prayed about it and thought about it,” said Riggs, who noted that it is a neat program.
She observed that while she might not be able to pay for a girl to go to prom, she can help by storing the dresses for the young girls who are planning to attend the spring dance.
Friends are letting her borrow some clothing racks where the dresses will be displayed and the girls can choose from their favorites. Each girl may bring one person with her when trying on dresses, and there will be volunteers available to help the girls with the dresses, according to Riggs.
Six classrooms at the church will serve as dressing rooms, and three girls may try on dresses at a time.
Riggs noted that the prom dress give-away is a non-profit event that she hopes to offer yearly.
She said the focus of the event, as reflected in its name, is meant to be on the girl.
“I wanted the emphasis to be on ‘you,’ ” she explained.
Girls wishing to sign up for one of the time slots may visit tinyurl.com/PromDressGiveaway or search Facebook or Instagram for SimplyBeYOUtifulKY. No walk-ins will be accepted.
Face masks must be worn, and hand sanitizer will be available.
Several time slots remained as of Monday.
