Organizers of Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury’s annual Hammers & High Heels event had to make a quick U-turn late in the planning stage last year and go with a virtual event because the COVID-19 virus.

This year, organizers of the 11th annual event had the time and experience to plan a big bash, even if it again will be virtual.

A Night of Songs & Stories, which is set for May 20, will feature three uniquely talented singer-songwriters.

“It was a hard decision, but to be on the safe side, we decided to go virtual again,” said Jennee Galland, Habitat for Humanity COO. “Hopefully, next year will be a normal, festive event.”

The event raises money for the local Women Build project, which this year will benefit Searria Peoples, a single mom with four children. Organizers hope to raise $70,000 to buy the “bricks and sticks” for the house, Galland said.

Work on Peoples’ house will begin the second week in April in a subdivision in Columbia.

“We’re one of a few (Habitat) affiliates that actually have women build a house,” Galland said. “Dana Hardy from Westhaven is already putting her team together.”

The Hammers & High Heels event will kick off with an online auction starting on May 10 and run through the livestream broadcast on May 20. The auction will feature trips, unique artist memorabilia and sports icons as well as items from Franklin’s finest retailers.

Beginning that same day, wine enthusiasts are encouraged enter the Stock the Cellar Wine Pull. Make a $25 donation and get a chance to win one of three cases of wine — valued from $240 to $360 — from Arrington Vineyards. Make additional $25 donations and get an entry for each one.

Those with a flair for fashion are encourage to make a $10 donation, take a photo of a pair of fabulous high heels or a “bedazzled” hammer and post it on social media for an opportunity to win a fun prize presented during the live event on May 20.

Then, from 7 to 8 p.m. on May 20, the 10-day event will be topped off with A Night of Songs & Stories with Tammy Rogers King, Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay. Dawn Davenport, local Emmy award-winning sports broadcaster, will be the emcee.

Leigh is an American singer-songwriter and guitar and mandolin player whose to-the-point storytelling style has elevated her to cult status in Europe, Scandinavia, across the United States, South America and the United Kingdom.

Her songs have been recorded by Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney, Charley Crockett and many others.

McKay’s songs have taken him across the United States and all over the world. In 1993, he was discovered by songwriting legend Guy Clark while performing his songs at a venue in Kerrville, Texas.

In the 2000s, Noel had several regional hits in Texas with his brother, Hollin McKay, and their McKay Brothers band.

These days McKay can be found playing his songs to packed houses of astute listeners both stateside and in Europe.

Leigh has recently become McKay’s songwriting and duet partner and their collaborations have garnered wide acclaim. When not on the road, McKay splits his time between Austin and Nashville.

King’s long career in Nashville began in 1986, when she moved here to finish college at Belmont University. In 1990, she began her touring career by playing in Patty Loveless’ band.  She’s since toured with artists such as Trisha Yearwood, Reba McEntire, the Dead Reckoners and the Steeldrivers.

King has recorded with many artists, including Wynonna Judd, Buddy and Julie Miller, Matraca Berg, Keiran Kane, Kevin Welch and Pam Tillis. Her songs have been recorded by Terri Clark, Frances Black and the Steeldrivers.  As a member of the Steeldrivers, she is a Grammy winner and four-time nominee.
