I've never believed in a wardrobe ordered by season, for me, it's about picking out pieces that are trans-seasonal depending on what you pair them with.
If I can't see that I'll get at least two seasons wear out of a garment, it won't go in my shopping basket (unless it's a piece from the M&S x Nobody's Child collaboration which, it turns out, I can't resist).
My clothes test is both cost-effective and eco-friendly but it does rather rule out a whole range of options that pop up online as we teeter over into spring.
So when I came across the Conditions Apply Checked Maxi Dress by chance in the Anthropologie sale, I couldn't have abandoned my half-eaten Malteser Bunny and whipped my Amex out of my bag any faster.
The dress is currently 50% off, but I would have bought it at full price - and here's why:
The fit is forgiving yet flattering, and could easily be paired with a waist belt if you want to create more of a synched-in silhouette.
It's easy to throw on for a day working at home or for a weekend mooching about the house baking hot cross buns and watching Ru Paul's Drag Race reruns, but it also looks on-trend and put together when paired with ankle boots or sandals for a warm day out.
The checked pattern makes it reminiscent of many pieces produced by Ganni (for triple the price) and the blue makes it a bit more interesting than a black smock dress, but isn't so garish that you can't pair it with other pieces in your wardrobe.
Season-wise, you could wear it with Birkenstocks in the summer and stay cool, or pair with tights, boots and an oversized cardi in the winter for a cosy, warmer look.
The dress is still currently available in all sizes (SS - XL) and is made out of regenerated bamboo viscose – a fabric that’s upcycled from by product that would otherwise end up in landfill.
I couldn't love it any more - and I think you'll feel equally as besotted.
