Still need to say yes to the dress?
Town and Country Christian Church, 2133 Tucker Rd, will be hosting a prom dress shop event from 2-5 p.m. March 14.
“It’s kind of just Prom Garage Sale, where people can drop off their dress at 2 o’clock on March 14, and people can come shop for a dress,” event organizer Misty Weaver said.
During this time, high school girls can come out to the church to buy or sell prom dresses.
Anyone looking to sell a dress will need to drop it off at the church with a price tag and the seller’s name. If the dress sells, $5 from that profit will be donated to the church. If it doesn’t sell, the seller can pick it up at 5 p.m.
In terms of setting the price, the person selling the dress should price it “no more than half of what they paid” for the dress as a good rule of thumb, Weaver said.
Shelbyville High School has cancelled its prom, so the parents will be hosting a parent-organized prom on April 24. More information about this event will be made available at a later date.
“We will also have almost 100 dresses who donated, so any girl who needs a dress from Shelbyville High School can go to their high school counselor and get a ticket, and then they can come Sunday and turn that ticket in for a dress to prom,” Weaver said. “They will keep that dress. That is theirs to keep.”
Attention will not be called to those who have a ticket. It will be discreet, Weaver said.
Weaver threw this event together with a member of Town and Country and another person who came up with the idea.
“I know the schools normally have an event for girls to go pick out a dress, but with COVID this year, it was canceled. We don’t want any girl to go without having a dress or having to miss out on their special prom.”
The church is accepting dresses from other counties. While the shop is open to girls of all schools, only free dresses will go to SHS students with tickets.
This is the first time Town and Country has done an event like this.
“I just reached out to [a person at the church] and said ‘Hey, do you think your church would allow this,’ and she said, ‘let me check Sunday’ and then sent me a text and said ‘yep, we’re all good.’ I think they were really open to the idea of girls having an affordable dress for prom, and obviously we don’t want anyone to do without.”
“Everybody is in a tough situation,” Weaver said. “Hopefully everyone comes out on Sunday. We think this is a win-win situation for everyone.”
