Glimmers of a fashion revival are starting to come into sight. Sweatpants are slowly being replaced by comfy jeans and flats are being ditched for joyous heels. For the latter, a quick office poll reveals that we’re applying a crawl before you walk and walk before you run methodology. After all, for the last year, our feet have grown accustomed to only the comfiest of shoes (if any at all).
To ease back into high-heel wearing, I’ve asked a few of my colleagues to share their vision of the perfect pair of reemergence heels. While each editor has a very distinct style, their selects all have one thing in common: an arch-friendly heel. Whether it’s the smooth sole of a Castañer wedge or the micro-mini point of a By Far sandal, their post-quarantine heels make going from point A to point B a cinch. And just because there are no sky-high stilettos here, that doesn’t mean that the styles are lacking excitement. They’re packed with eye-catching details—like shiny gold chains, color block hues, and unique silhouettes.
If you’re looking for easy ways to elevate your shoe collection this spring, take a closer look at all of the fun, comfortable heels ahead.

I’m a sucker for a mule sandal in the summer and I usually look to Maryam Nassir Zadeh for a good new color. Her latest style comes with really cool trimmings (love a chain detail!). After a year of wearing flats, I’ll be easing into heels that hover no more than three inches off the ground. These fit the bill nicely. Not sure I can handle any higher than that just yet (or maybe ever!).

Definitely not the definition of a sky-high heel, but these snappy kitten heels by Roger Vivier are my ideal reemergence, welcome-back-to-a-little-extra-height shoes.

Easy does it is my approach to reemergence heels. I love a bit of elevation, but I’m not ready for a skyscraper stiletto. Even pre-pandemic, I tended to keep heel heights on the lower side. The espadrille, however, is my heel-hack—as a proper, Spanish-made espadrille is technically a heel but it’s also comfortable (really and truly). I’m loyal to Castañer because the Barcelona-based label’s shoes have never let me down.

I’m a heel girl at heart, so I miss wearing sky-high shoes. As eager as I am to stomp around NYC in heels again, I know that my feet aren’t physically ready for the challenge just yet. That’s why I’m easing my way back into the groove with chunky sandals by Cult Gaia.

These By Far sandals take the kitten heel to a new extreme. Does 30mm count?

Many of my friends’ postponed weddings now have new dates for 2021 and I can’t wait to put my party shoes back on. I have my eye on this Bottega Veneta pair for when I break onto the dance floor once again.
