BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — A viral TikTok video shows Green Country firefighters strutting through Bartlesville in red heels.

It’s all part of the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event to raise awareness of domestic violence.

President and Victim Advocate of SAFE-NOW, Dr. Shelly Holdman, says this is a fun way to teach others about domestic violence.

“When the men walk alongside their sons and daughters, they can have that conversation,” Holdman says.

She says you can’t understand what someone has gone through without walking in their shoes.

“It’s a symbolic mile, and they walk saying ‘we stand up for women, we stand up for victims, we stand up for kids.’”

For Washington County Deputy Director, Public Information Officer Melissa Mayes says for her, this walk is personal.

“My sister was a victim of domestic violence; she was murdered,” Mayes says.

“I kind of made the decision that I wanted to keep her name alive, and speak to others and bring awareness.”

She says she’s grateful to her emergency management family for joining her in this walk, along with all the firefighters from various towns.

The organization SAFE-NOW hosted the walk. All the money raised is going to help victims of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence.
