Lil Nas X decided to make an outfit change at the 2021 BET Awards, but that doesn't make his second look more meaningful than the first. In fact, his blue-and-white gown — created by Andrea Grossi, a young graduate from Polimoda Fashion Institute in Florence — has a print that you've got to zoom in on to get the message, in case the voluminous silhouette didn't suggest he was making a statement.
Grossi crafted his debut season one designs, part of a collection called "Welcome to DeusLand," to question our society's customs and politics, which you'll see when you take in the shaded graphics on this "Historical" dress up close. It's also been worn by musician David Blank and featured in magazines, and now Lil Nas X has brought it into the spotlight to honor Black culture, unveiling the full look that comes complete with a zippered corset, a jacket, and white suspenders. All of the pieces were crafted through sustainable techniques, which is a commitment the label is dedicated to.
After twirling for the cameras in Grossi's "Historical" number, Lil Nas X proceeded to change into a '70s-inspired floral pantsuit from Richard Quinn's fall/winter 2021 collection, embroidered with crystals and colorful beads. Both outfits were accessorized with the same metal studs and silver rings. Scroll to see Lil Nas X channel two different moods into one major moment on the red carpet.
