When it comes to polarising pieces of clothing, the mini skirt is definitely up there. Excellent at making both friends and enemies - either you’re a devoted wearer or wouldn’t touch it with a bargepole - people always have an opinion about it. And as unlikely as it sounds, that opinion, for the moment at least, seems to be very favourable indeed.
Irina Shayk has been wearing a cropped kilt-style mini from Burberry - she paired the skirt with a grungy combination of a black hoodie and black tights - while influencers have also been sporting micro hemlines on Instagram.
Jessie Bush styled an itsy-bitsy beige mini skirt (again, a kind of kilt from Peter Do) with an oversized rugby shirt that almost eclipsed it entirely. Chrissy Rutherford wore her skirt (a pleated number from Zac Posen) with a grungy-preppy combo of a sweatshirt, chain-link loafers and short ankle socks.
Next season’s catwalks - from the round of fashion shows just gone - also proved that minis are edging out the competition. They were spotted at Rick Owens, Chloe and Isabel Marant.
Perhaps you don’t buy the hemline index - the theory that skirt lengths shorten in times of economic boom and lengthen in times of bust - but perhaps this spells good news for next year if this season’s catwalks are anything to go by, given that the thigh’s-the-limit hemlines were on almost every look at Miu Miu. Here’s hoping the fashion world knows something the treasury doesn’t...
