Remember back to the heady days of 2019 when we all wore high heels? We would totter our way from the office to lunch in a pair of stilettos before clip-clopping our way to dinner and drinks in sky-high spikes.
We wore them to weddings, funerals, parties, after-parties and everything in-between. No matter how much our feet hurt or our baby toes were bloody and shredded, we soldiered on, such was our love of the heel.
Blame Sex And The City and its worship at the altar of Manolo Blahnik, but the women of Ireland have been attached to stilettos for decades.
Since March this year however, there has been no dinner, drinks or any events to attend, leaving our heels gathering dust in the back of wardrobes.
And unless you’re a fashion masochist, it’s unlikely that you have been wearing a pair of Louboutins while hoovering the house.
If you did by footwear this year, it was probably a pair of Skechers or sturdy hiking boots. Wearing anything more dainty would somehow feel out of sync.
Now that we have had nine months without our beloved heels and our long-suffering feet have had time to recover, will we ever strap a pair of stilettos to our pins again?
Indications are, that while we may return to high heels, it won't be any time soon. 2020 has seen the rise of the 'ugly shoe'.
Crocs, the original ugly shoe have become hugely popular with teenagers of late, with 45,000 people forming a 'virtual' queue for tie-dye Crocs this summer.
Even superstars aren’t immune. Ariana Grande, Jon Bon Jovi to former First Lady Michelle Obama have all been spotted rocking Crocs.
Birkenstocks, the favourite footwear of the ageing hippy in your life, have proved particularly popular this year with sales skyrocketing, along with bulky Dr Martens which have also seen a massive resurgence.
Designers such as Versace, Prada and Givenchy all showcased 'ugly shoes' this season that wouldn't be out of place in a hospital. When Clogs, wellies and chunky loafers infiltrating style catwalks, us mere mortals will soon follow the trend.
And while the ugly shoe trend may not be sexy or stylish, it is very, very comfortable and for that we should be grateful. When we have nothing to do except walk, we might as well make it fun for ourselves. We will wear heels again, but until that time comes, you'll find us in our tie-dye Crocs.
