Having grown up in the South, I’m no stranger to a smocked dress. As a little girl, my mother sewed one for me for almost every holiday. I had frocks adorned with snowmen, birthday cakes, turkeys, bunny rabbits, and whatever other characters might have been seasonally appropriate. And while I haven't worn one for decades, as pandemic-related restrictions start to ease, I'm considering making the smocked look (albeit one without festive imagery) my go-to this spring.
The style is certainly having a moment, with designers from Tory Burch to Proenza Schouler to Molly Goddard putting their own spin on the trend, but my interest in the smocked dress is about more than jumping on the bandwagon. As my calendar start filling up with non-Zoom social obligations, I'm not quite ready to go back to structured silhouettes, or, for that matter, hard pants. Like so many over the past twelve months, I've put on a few extra pandemic pounds, and a smocked dress offers a flattering, feminine aesthetic that looks pulled together without being constricting or uncomfortable. It's the perfect style for easing into the new normal.
Rebecca Hessel Cohen, the the founder and creative director of LoveShackFancy, agrees. "I think we are all ready to dress up again, to put on our prettiest dresses and let our hair down.
