Perhaps you don’t buy the hemline index - the theory that skirt lengths shorten in times of economic boom and lengthen in times of bust - but now’s the time to become a believer. If this season’s catwalks are anything to go by, we may have a fighting chance yet, with thigh’s-the-limit hemlines spotted at Rick Owens, Chloé, Isabel Marant and Versace. Do they know something we (and the treasury) doesn't? And could they be predicting a recovery that will usher in a second Roaring Twenties? The jury's out for the moment, but regardless, the mini skirt is set for greatness this summer. And the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna are already onboard.
Beyoncé posted a picture of a quilted denim mini last week, while Rihanna wore hers with stilettos and a Tony Soprano-esque shirt to go grocery shopping last month. And the day before that, Ri wore a black leather mini for dinner in LA.

On the Versace catwalk for spring/summer 2021, the mini skirts were everything a mini skirt should be, with a wavy hemline that flipped as the model walked in platform sandals. At Isabel Marant, meanwhile, hemlines came up short across the board, with dungaree dresses and skirts all lingering around the upper thigh.

Instagram is also already awash with minis. MyTheresa's Tiffany Hsu posted a picture of an itsy-bitsy leather skirt with the caption, 'When summer couldn't come soon enough'.
Courtnee Crews, meanwhile, posed against the window wearing the zesty combination of an orange cardigan with a yellow mini that had a subtle '60s vibe.
Gearing up to go bare-legged sometime between spring and summer is a pretty big deal in normal years, but in 2021 it almost feels unthinkable after so long spent bundled in leggings and sweatpants. We suggest easing yourself in gently by making the transition sooner rather than later. That way you can start off wearing your mini skirts with tights, gradually shedding their opaque protection when you feel the time is right (or mid-May, whichever comes first).
And really, with so many playful options out there, you don't want to miss out on mini season. Mango's sensible utility skirt is great for wearing with ribbed tank tops or loose button-downs and Birkenstocks, while Zara's lemon-coloured linen mini can multi-task between garden parties and being a chic beach cover-up. The only thing you might want to invest in is a folding chair to bring to picnics and back gardens where no seating is provided. It's all well and good getting into the mini skirt spirit, but that doesn't mean you want to flash your knickers to everyone.
