BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- You may have seen young men walking down the street in high heels today…that’s because the 10th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes took place on the Western Kentucky University campus.
Over 150 fraternity men participated in the charity event. Each participant wears red high heels to walk a mile route through campus to raise awareness for sexual assault.
Proceeds from entry fees and donations are going to Hope Harbor, a local organization that supports and empowers anyone impacted by sexual trauma.
The foot pain they just briefly experience is supposed to remind them of how a survivor of sexual violence deals with vivid memories or suffering for the rest of their life.
After it was cancelled twice this spring, they were happy to finally have the event today.
“This year it means a lot more with everything going around campus. We look forward to doing it, we’ve been putting in a lot of work in the last 3 months and due to weather and logistical reasons it was cancelled. But today, finally we’re doing this and we have a huge amount of guys show up and show support for why sexual assault should never happen,” said IFC member Tribhuwan Singh.
To keep everyone socially distanced and safe, they had groups begin walking every five minutes over a two hour period.
